IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The first line graph tracks the changes in the percentage of ownership of electrical gadgets in households while the second line graph depicts the number of hours engaged in housework every week in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, refrigerator purchases show a dramatic rise, before it levels off with the percentage of vacuum cleaner; however washing machine illustrates a steady pattern. In contrast, the amount of time spent in housework is reduced.
In 1920, proprietorship of refrigerator starts from 0, rising up to 55%, in 1940 and continues to climb at 100% in 2000 before it plateaued. The ownership of vacuum cleaner grew from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2000 and then remained constant. However, washing machine demand begins at 40%, rises to 70% in 1960, followed by a moderate drop before it rebounds to nearly 75% in 2019.
Consequently, duration for washing clothes, meal preparation, and cleaning declines notably from 50% to 20% in 1960. Subsequently changes irregularly, and falls at 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall contrast: appliance ownership generally rose while time spent on housework fell, and you describe the broad trends for all three appliances. Several figures are also reported accurately, including the washing-machine rise to 70% in 1960 and the vacuum cleaner reaching 100% in 2000. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerator ownership was about 2% in 1920, not 0%, and it reached 100% by 1980, rather than 2000. Housework is measured in hours, not percentages, and the final figure is about 11 hours, not 10%. The overview also says the refrigerator levels off with the vacuum cleaner, although the refrigerator reaches full ownership earlier. More precise comparisons and accurate units would make the report more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, appliance details, and housework details. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information, and connectors such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “However” help signal relationships. Some links are less effective or mechanical, though. “Consequently” does not clearly show why housework hours follow from the appliance trends, and “Subsequently changes irregularly” lacks a clear subject and does not explain the later pattern. The appliance paragraph also moves through the series without a strong comparative link between them. Use explicit references such as “the figure for housework” and connect the trends by time or contrast to make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on stock transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “dramatic rise,” “levels off,” “moderate drop,” “rebounds,” and “declines notably.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat “increase” and “decrease.” Some less common expressions are not well matched to the chart, however: “proprietorship” and “purchases” suggest ownership or buying behaviour in an unnatural way, while “washing machine demand” describes demand rather than household ownership. “Percentage of ownership” is also less direct than the chart’s measure. Choose precise, natural collocations such as “the proportion of households owning a refrigerator” and “the number of hours spent on housework.” This would improve accuracy and style while retaining your useful range of trend vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview contrast introduced by “while” and the sentence describing the washing-machine trend with “followed by” and “before.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “In 1920, proprietorship of refrigerator starts,” the article is missing and the tense shifts from the past-time frame; “the percentage … rose” would be more consistent. The sentence “Subsequently changes irregularly” has no explicit subject or finite verb, and “falls at 10%” does not form the intended grammatical pattern. There is also a tense inconsistency in “before it plateaued” after present-tense trend wording. Keep past-tense reporting consistent and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
