Student answer (Band 4.0)

The two charts illustrate the amount of time when electrical appliences are used in different houseworks between 1920 to 2019 in a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response makes a brief attempt to describe the charts and includes an overall statement, but it misidentifies what they show: the first chart records household ownership of appliances, not the amount of time appliances are used. The claim that appliance use decreases over time is also unsupported; refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership rise, while washing-machine ownership increases overall despite a small dip. No figures or meaningful comparisons are reported, and the housework-hours chart is omitted entirely. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words. To improve, accurately identify both measures, summarise the main trends, and support the overview with selected figures from the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The two sentences have a basic order: an opening description is followed by an attempt at an overview, signalled by “Overall.” This gives the response a minimal sense of organisation. However, there is no development beyond these statements, and the charts’ separate information is not organised or connected. The second sentence also groups the appliance trends together even though the refrigerator and washing-machine patterns differ, making the progression unclear. A fuller response should use a clear introduction, an overview, and logically grouped detail paragraphs, with comparisons linking related figures. Use cohesive language to show contrasts and changes rather than relying on a single transition.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of task-related terms, including “charts,” “electrical appliances,” “refrigerator,” and “washing machine,” so the topic is partly recognisable. However, the vocabulary is very limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “amount of time when electrical appliances are used” confuses ownership with usage, while “consumption of refrigerator” does not describe the chart’s measure. There are also spelling errors in “appliences,” “concumption,” and “useage.” Build a more precise range for describing data, such as “the proportion of households owning,” “rose,” “remained stable,” and “declined,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response contains two complete sentences and uses a basic complex structure in “Overall, …,” but the range is narrow and the sentences do not demonstrate much control of varied forms. In the first sentence, “between 1920 to 2019” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; write “between 1920 and 2019” or “from 1920 to 2019.” The phrase “the useage of these appliences are reduced” also has a subject–verb agreement problem: “use” is singular, so it would take “is,” although the intended trend is factually inaccurate. Practise accurate time expressions, agreement, and varied sentence structures when reporting comparisons and changes.
