Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two subjects of the charts and include several relevant figures, such as housework falling from 50 hours in 1920 to 20 in 1960, and refrigerator ownership reaching 90% in 1960. However, the overview is unclear and incomplete: saying the refrigerator was highest and housework lowest “at the end” does not summarise the main trends across the period. Some data are inaccurate or confusing: the washing machine starts at 40%, not 30%, and the 1940 refrigerator figure is about 55%, not 0%. The account also does not clearly report the vacuum cleaner’s rise to full ownership or the washing machine’s slight dip and later increase. A clearer overview and more accurate selection of key comparisons would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing figures, so the reader can recognise an attempt to organise the report. However, progression is not consistently clear: the discussion moves between appliances and housework, then returns to the washing machine, making comparisons difficult to follow. Time references such as “In 1920 to 1940” are repeated, while “In conclusion” introduces no new summary and largely repeats the task. Some linking expressions, including “To begin with,” do not clearly show how the information relates. Group the appliance trends together and describe the housework trend separately, using clear time periods and comparisons to create a more logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “ownership,” “gradually,” and “decrease,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “was highest percentage,” “stand on,” “move sideways,” and “hours that allow for woek.” Repetition of “hours,” “percentage,” and “move” also makes the report less precise. Spelling errors such as “grapht” and “woek” further reduce clarity. Aim to use standard trend language consistently—for example, appliances “rose to” or “remained stable at” a percentage, while housework hours “declined to” a figure. More accurate vocabulary would make the comparisons easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can understand several of the intended comparisons. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “the refrigerator was highest percentage,” “the vacuum cleaner and refrigerator was gradually increase,” and “the hours of housework decrease.” These should use appropriate articles and forms such as “had the highest percentage,” “increased,” and “decreased.” Some sentences also combine ideas without clear grammatical links, as in the description of the washing machine. Practise forming accurate past-tense sentences and checking subject–verb agreement before adding more complex structures.
