Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graphs provide the information about changes in ownerships of electrical appliances and the time spent on doing housework in home from 1920 to 2019. Overall, it is apparent that proportion of washing machine own by the people was highest in 1920 after that ownerships of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased over the time, while the time spent on housework reduced over timeframe.

Firstly, the ownership of washing machine was at 40% and then increased slightly with the passage of time and reached just above 70% in 2019. In addition, the ownerships of vacuum cleaner was at 30% in 1920 and then soared to 100% in 2000 and remained constant throughtout the time period. Furthermore, the ownership of refrigerator in 1920 was significantly lower than other appliances after that surged to 90% in 1960 the continous rose of owneship reached 100% in 1980 and remained same for remaining time.

Secondly, the time spent on housework in week were 50 hours in 1920 after that number of hours reduced gradually with timeframes and reached just above 10 hours in a week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and give a relevant overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. The main trends are mostly accurate, including the refrigerator reaching 100% by 1980 and the vacuum cleaner reaching full ownership by 2000. However, the overview says washing-machine ownership was highest in 1920, which contradicts the figures: it rose from 40% to about 75% by 2019. The description also misses useful comparisons, such as the refrigerator’s particularly rapid early rise and the washing machine’s slight dip around 1980 before recovering. The housework trend is reported clearly, but “reduced gradually” overlooks the period when it remained at about 15 hours. More precise selection and comparison of these features would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by appliance details and then the housework figures. This makes the information easy to follow, and sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “Secondly” help signal the progression. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the main ideas are grouped sensibly. However, the repeated use of “after that” and “Furthermore” makes some links feel mechanical, while the appliance paragraph lists trends rather than consistently comparing them. The overview’s claim about washing-machine ownership also disrupts the logical account of the data. To strengthen cohesion, use a wider range of linking structures and connect related figures directly—for example, contrasting the refrigerator’s rapid rise with the washing machine’s slower, less consistent growth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased,” “soared,” “remained constant,” and “reduced gradually.” These choices communicate the broad movements in the charts, and some less common wording is attempted. However, several word forms, spellings, and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “ownerships,” “owneship,” “continous rose,” and “in home.” “Reached just above 70%” is also less precise than the chart’s approximate figure of 75%. Repetition of “time” and “after that” limits flexibility. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “rose to approximately…”. Careful proofreading would also remove spelling errors and improve the precision of trend descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while” and “after that,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “proportion of washing machine own by the people was highest” needs an article and a correctly formed clause, while “the ownerships of vacuum cleaner was” has problems with number and agreement. In “the time spent on housework in week were 50 hours,” the subject–verb agreement and article use are inaccurate. Several long sentences also join multiple ideas without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate comparisons with controlled clauses, and check articles, singular/plural agreement, and verb forms before submitting.
