Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response attempts to describe the appliance trends, but the overview contains a major misreading: it says the refrigerator was at 100% in 1920, when it was only about 2%. It also claims the vacuum cleaner was the lowest at around 30%, although that figure belongs to 1920 and the refrigerator was lower. The account of housework is especially incomplete: it is mentioned as though it were an appliance, and its clear decline from 50 hours to 11 hours is not reported. Some later appliance figures are broadly accurate, including refrigerators reaching 100% and washing-machine ownership dipping before rising. To make the summary more complete and accurate, give a correct overview of the main trends and compare all four series, including the steady fall in housework time.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening, an overview and a paragraph of figures. The sequence through years also gives the reader some sense of progression. However, the overview does not clearly identify the main trends, and the body moves abruptly between appliances and housework; for example, “the housework in 1940 to 50%” confuses the series and interrupts the comparison. Linking expressions such as “And” and “Again” are used mechanically, while references like “the next 20 years” and “the finally point” are not always clear. Group the appliance trends together and describe housework separately, using clear comparisons and accurate time references to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “value,” and “increases,” so the reader can recognise that it is describing chart data. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning difficult to follow. “Digital appiliance” is inaccurate for the chart’s electrical appliances, while “price of time spent doing household” does not express hours of housework. Phrases such as “the goal of about 74%” and “the amount spend in houses washing machine” are also unclear. Spelling errors, including “appiliance,” further reduce precision. Use standard chart language such as “ownership,” “share of households,” and “hours spent on housework,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, but control of sentence structure is inconsistent. Several clauses lack a clear subject or verb, as in “In 1920, refrigerator starting value in low,” and “Straight the percentage 70% in 1960.” Verb forms and agreement are also unreliable: “refrigerator had the highest proportion in 100%” and “washing machine remain the stable” do not form accurate grammatical patterns. Punctuation and capitalisation are uneven, particularly at the start of the overview and around the year-by-year figures. These errors often make relationships between figures hard to understand. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and use consistent past-tense reporting, for example, “Refrigerator ownership rose from about 2% in 1920 to 100% by 1980.”
