Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line charts illustrates a comparison of the changes in owernership of electrical appliances and the quality of time spend working in households in a country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, the electrical appliances used are a washing machine, a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner in which washing machine had the highest percentage. While, the hours spent per week in doing house work have reduced by timeframe.

In 1920, the ownership of washing machine was at 40%, vaccum cleaner at 30% and the refrigerator had the least approximately around 1%. While, the number of hours spend per week in housework were at 50%. By 1960, there was a various changes seen in the ownership of the appliance, in which refrigerator had a dramactilly rise, washing machine and vaccum cleaner rised by 20%, respectively and the number of hours reduced to 20%.

In 2019, the usage of washing machine the maximum by 100%, vaccum cleaner increased to around 73%. In contrast, the number of hours spent in household had dropped below to 10%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework time, and your opening and 1920 figures give the reader a relevant starting point. However, the overview is inaccurate: the washing machine did not have the highest ownership overall; refrigerators and vacuum cleaners both reached 100%, while washing machines ended at about 75%. The final-year details are also misreported: the washing machine was not at 100%, and the vacuum cleaner was about 100%, not 73%. You mention the 1960 changes but omit the important later milestones, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and housework falling to 11 hours in 2019. More accurate selection and comparison of the main trends would make the summary more complete and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs covering earlier and later data. This gives the information some logical organisation, and time markers such as “In 1920,” “By 1960,” and “In 2019” help guide the reader. However, the progression is incomplete because the middle paragraph jumps from 1920 to 1960 and the final paragraph gives little detail about the intervening years. Some linking is awkward or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “While” and “In contrast,” and the sentence beginning “Overall” combines several ideas unclearly. Grouping appliance trends together and housework figures together, with clearer links between comparisons, would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “reduced,” and “in contrast,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “owernership,” “vaccum,” “dramactilly,” and “rised.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “quality of time spend working” and “the usage of washing machine the maximum.” These choices can make the intended meaning difficult to follow, especially when describing data. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe a figure as “stood at” a percentage or say that ownership “rose” or “increased.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “In contrast” and a time clause introduced by “By 1960.” However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “The line charts illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the number of hours spend per week in housework were at 50%” has problems with verb form, agreement, and sentence construction. In “In 2019, the usage of washing machine the maximum by 100%,” the sentence lacks a finite verb. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and tense in each clause.
