Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart illustrates and compare the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between [redacted phone]. In 2019, about 100 percent households owned electrical appliances such as refrigerator and vacuum cleaner while in 1920, housework consumed household at the rate of 50 hours per week which was marked as the highest consumption with respect to usage while in 2019 this number had decreased to 10 hours per week. Although the availability of electrical appliances varied in numbers from 1920 onwards till 2019. Washing machine usage increased from 40 percent in 1920 to 60 percent in 1940 to 70 percent in 1960 but declined in 1980 to 65 but from 1980 onwards its availability increased in households to more than 70 percent till 2019. Refrigerator consumption reached 55 percent in 1940 and then rose significantly to 90 percent in 1960 and remained at 100 percent from 1980 to 2019 with no change. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You cover both charts and report several key figures accurately, including the rise in refrigerator ownership to 100% and the fall in housework from 50 hours to around 10–11 hours. You also describe the main appliance trends. However, the response lacks a clear, concise overview of the dominant patterns; the opening focuses on individual figures rather than summarising that appliance ownership generally rose while housework declined. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 2019 appliance figure is not 100% for all appliances, since washing machines are about 75%, and housework is measured in hours, not a percentage. The washing-machine figure for 2019 is also described only vaguely as “more than 70 percent.” Select the main trends and report units and values precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response includes information from both charts, and the sequence of years generally helps the reader follow the data. However, ideas are crowded into one long paragraph, with no clear separation between an overview and supporting details. Several transitions are awkward or confusing: “Although the availability…” does not lead to a complete contrast, and the final sequence moves backwards through the years without a clear organising principle. Repeated use of “while,” “and then,” and “but” also makes connections feel mechanical. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and details, group the appliance trends together, and describe housework in a separate chronological comparison. This would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased,” “declined,” “rose significantly,” and “remained.” These choices help communicate changes over time. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data. “Housework consumed household at the rate” and “highest consumption with respect to usage” are difficult to interpret, while “refrigerator consumption” and “vacuum cleaner usage” suggest use rather than household ownership. “Surged slightly” is also an unsuitable description of the gradual rise in housework hours from 15 to 20. Aim for precise collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “hours spent on housework,” and avoid repeating “usage” and “consumption.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in agreement and sentence structure: “The chart illustrates and compare” should use matching verb forms, and “Although the availability… varied” is left as an incomplete clause. Articles and plural forms are also missing in “100 percent households” and “in households,” and the long opening sentence joins several ideas without clear punctuation. The final sentence fragment beginning “But in 1920” further weakens accuracy. Use shorter, complete sentences, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and punctuate comparisons so each sentence expresses one clear relationship.
