Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
At first, lets talk about Refrigerators, there is a great increase in the percentage of households from 1920 to 1960, percentage of its usage almost increases 90% in this period of time. And then from 1960 to onwards its usage increases for about 10%.
The percentage of Vaccum cleaners increases from 30% to 100% at the rate of 10% in per 10 years, from 1920 to 2000 and then it stays same onwads to 2019.
And at last, the percentage of Washing machines increases from 40% to 60% at the rate of 10% in per 20 years, its percentage decreases 5% from 1960 to 1980 and then again increases 5% from 1980 to 2000. And from the year 2000 to 2019 it increases only 5%.
The number of hours of housework per week per household decreases from 50 to 20 hours per week at the rate of 10 hours per weeks per 10 years from 1920 to 1960. Then it decreses only 5 hours per week from 1960 to 1980 and reaches 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the main subject of each series and report several broad trends, including the sharp rise in refrigerator ownership and the overall fall in housework hours. However, important figures and comparisons are inaccurate or incomplete. Refrigerator ownership rises from about 2% to 90% by 1960, then reaches 100% by 1980—not a further increase of only 10% after 1960. Washing-machine ownership ends at 75%, and the final housework figure is about 11 hours, rather than 10. The response also lacks a clear overview bringing together the main patterns, such as appliances becoming more common while housework time declined. More accurate reporting and a concise overview are needed for a fuller response to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into paragraphs by appliance and then housework, so the reader can follow which data series is being discussed. Sequencing phrases such as “At first” and “And at last” also signal movement between topics. However, the organisation is mainly a list of separate descriptions rather than a clear progression from an overview to supporting details. Some linking is repetitive, especially the repeated use of “And then” and “from … to …,” while the opening “At first” does not introduce an overall summary. Grouping the appliance trends together and adding a brief overview would make the relationships between the series clearer and improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “increases,” “decreases,” and “hours of housework,” which makes the general subject understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “percentage of its usage,” “at the rate of 10% in per 10 years,” and “stays same onwards.” These expressions make some comparisons harder to interpret. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Vaccum,” “onwads,” and “decreses.” Aim for accurate trend language and natural collocations, for example “the proportion of households owning refrigerators” and “remained unchanged.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect clauses and describe changes across time, and the reader can generally understand the intended trends. However, the sentence structures are repetitive, and attempts to express rates often produce faulty grammar, as in “at the rate of 10% in per 10 years” and “10 hours per weeks per 10 years.” There are also errors in sentence boundaries and punctuation: the opening uses a comma splice between “1920 to 1960” and “percentage,” and several sentences begin with “And.” The phrase “from 1960 to onwards” is also grammatically awkward. Practise forming clear comparative sentences with accurate prepositions and punctuation, while varying sentence patterns.
