Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and reports several appliance trends, including the washing-machine rise from 40% to 75% and the vacuum-cleaner increase to 100%. However, it does not provide a clear overview of the main features, especially the broad contrast between appliance ownership rising and housework hours falling. The second chart is omitted entirely, and the refrigerator account is incomplete: it gives 0% in 1920, whereas the chart shows about 2%, and says ownership reached the maximum without reporting the intermediate figures or when it did so. The vacuum-cleaner figure for 1940 is also given as 60%, rather than 50%. Select the key trends accurately and summarise both charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has some basic organisation: it introduces the charts and then gives separate paragraphs for washing machines, vacuum cleaners and refrigerators. This helps the reader identify which appliance is being discussed. However, there is no concluding overview, and the account stops before addressing the housework-hours graph, so the progression through the task is incomplete. Linking is also repetitive and mechanical, particularly the repeated sequence of “in 1940,” “in 1960” and “in 1980,” joined mainly by “and.” Use a clear overview followed by grouped comparisons, and vary transitions such as “by contrast,” “meanwhile” and “thereafter” to make relationships between trends clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “percentage of households,” “increased,” “decreased” and “maximum,” so the general subject is usually understandable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “ownerships,” “spent time on washing machine” and “maximum range.” Spelling errors, including “wasing” and “remaind,” also reduce accuracy. Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of households owning…,” “rose,” “fell slightly,” and “levelled off.” Take care to distinguish ownership from time spent on housework, and use appliance names consistently. A broader, more accurate range would make the comparisons clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe changes over time, but most sentences rely on a simple repeated pattern and do not show much variety in sentence structure. Verb forms and tense are often inaccurate or inconsistent: for example, “in 1940 it is increased” and “in 1980 it is decrease” should use past-tense forms such as “increased” and “decreased.” There are also problems with sentence construction in “the percentage of households was 40 to spent time on…,” which makes the relationship between the figure and the appliance unclear. Improve control of past-tense reporting and build complete sentences around each comparison. More accurate clauses and punctuation would make the data easier to follow.
