Student answer (Band 5.5)

This line chart compares the percentage of household appliances present in a house and how much work they perform on the weekly basis over the period of one year less than 1 century.

The overview of this line chart is that there was a continuous upward increase in the percentage of ownership of vacuum cleaner since 1920 to 2000 then levelled off till 2019 and the elevation is about 20 percent that starts from 30 percent and ends at 100 percent. It means in 2000 everyone is using vacuum cleaner in their houses.

Moreover, in the case of refrigerator, there is zero percent people who used it in 1920 while there is dramatically lift in the usage of refrigerator in 2019 that is 100 percent. Washing machine is used more in 1920 as compare to above two appliances but in 2019 it is used less as compare to refrigerator and vacuum cleaner.

Furthermore, the amount of time of their usage is the highest in 1920 as compare to other. In 1920, these electronics used 50 hours per week but with the passage of time their use is decreased to 20 hours per week in 1960 and then in 2019 it's usage is about 11 phours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important patterns, including the rise in vacuum-cleaner ownership, refrigerators reaching full household coverage, and the decline in housework time. However, the account is only partly accurate and some key comparisons are underdeveloped. The chart shows refrigerator ownership at about 2% in 1920, not zero, and the vacuum-cleaner increase from 30% to 100% is 70 percentage points, not “about 20 percent.” The overview also omits the broad fall in housework hours and the fact that washing-machine ownership fluctuates slightly rather than rising continuously. Clarify that the charts show appliance ownership and housework hours, not how much work the appliances perform, and report the main trends with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, comments on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph about housework time. This gives the reader some organisation, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” signal additions. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the overview focuses on vacuum cleaners before the other major trends, and the final paragraph refers to “their usage” without making clear whether this means appliance use or housework. Some transitions feel mechanical, while the information is not grouped into a clear overview followed by well-organised details. Use a concise overview to state the main contrasts, then organise the figures by appliance trends and housework hours, with clear references throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “levelled off,” “increased,” and “decreased,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “continuous upward increase,” “dramatically lift,” and “the amount of time of their usage.” “Everyone is using” also overstates what 100% household ownership means; “all households owned a vacuum cleaner” is more precise. There is repetition of “used” and “usage,” and “one year less than 1 century” is an unclear way to describe the period. Aim for a limited but accurate set of trend terms, and use precise phrases such as “household ownership” and “hours spent on housework.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while” and “but,” but control is uneven. Errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction appear in phrases such as “on the weekly basis,” “there is zero percent people,” and “Washing machine is used more.” The sentence beginning “The overview … is that there was…” is also cumbersome, and the final sentence has an unclear pronoun reference in “it’s usage.” These problems sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow, although the general meaning can usually be recovered. Practise accurate comparison structures and consistent past-tense reporting, for example, “ownership rose from 30% to 100%” and “housework time fell to 11 hours per week.”
