Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts illustrates the change in ownership of different electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, all kinds of electrical appliances have experienced a substantial growth in terms of usage from 1920 to 2019. The refrigerator has seen the maximum growth jumping from almost 2% in 1920 to 100% in 2019. Around 40% household had washing machine in 1920 making it the most common electrical household equipement to have in 1920. The number has rose to almost 75% in 2019. Additionally, Vaccum cleaner was owned by approximately 30% household, but in [redacted phone]% of household owns vaccum cleaner.

The second line chart illustrates the number of weekly hours spend on several kinds of housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning. The number of hours has greatly declined over the years. People used to spend around 50 hours per week in house chores in 1920, but a steady drop is experienced as only 11 to 12 hours are being utlized at weekly level for household work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and identify the main broad patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. The refrigerator’s rise from about 2% to full ownership and the vacuum cleaner’s increase from around 30% to 100% are relevant details, as are the washing-machine figures. This meets the task well, but the overview is not fully precise: washing-machine ownership dips from about 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980, so it does not simply show uninterrupted growth. The account of housework gives the start and end points but leaves out the substantial decline to 20 hours by 1960 and the later plateau around 15 hours. Including these stages and comparing the appliance trends more directly would make the report more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a separate paragraph on housework. The opening overview also helps the reader understand the main contrast between rising ownership and declining housework time. However, the appliance paragraph combines an overview with several individual figures, while the second chart receives only a brief summary, so the information is not balanced. Some links are also mechanical, particularly “Additionally,” and the repeated use of “in 1920” and “in 2019.” Improve progression by grouping appliance comparisons in a consistent order, then describing the housework decline in stages. Use linking phrases only where they clarify a comparison or change over time.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “substantial growth,” “declined,” “steady drop,” and “approximately,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this chart: “usage” suggests how often appliances are used rather than the proportion of households owning them, and “maximum growth” is less precise than describing the largest increase. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “equipement,” “Vaccum,” “vaccum,” and “utlized.” Phrases such as “hours spend on” and “household work” are not natural in this context. Aim for precise chart language such as “ownership,” “share of households,” and “hours spent on housework,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “People used to spend around 50 hours … but a steady drop is experienced.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The line charts illustrate,” because the subject is plural. Other examples include “40% household had” and “100% of household owns,” where number and verb agreement need correction, and “The number has rose,” which should use the correct past participle. The phrase “hours spend on” also needs a passive participle (“hours spent on”). Practise accurate agreement, articles and verb forms, while retaining your attempts to combine related information in longer sentences.
