IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
As technology has developed throughout the years, it has made household chores way more easier to conduct and has made our lives comfortable and spend more time on ourselves.
Talking about the ownership of electrical appliances between the years 1920 to 2019, there has been a hike in the purchase throughout the timeline. In previous years the concept of refrigerator was not much popular as the people had the habbit of consuming fresh goods. Similarly demand of other appliances like washing machine and vacuum cleaners started as well, as people started to work and could not spend much time in doing the household work. From 1920's washing machines and vacuum cleaners were seen in about 40% of household and refrigerators came in handy from late 1920's, which eventually increased over the years. As a result of owning these appliances the hours spent on housework reduced from 50 hours per week in 1920's to almost only 10 hours per week in 2019.
Overall we can say that technology which has developed over the years has reduced the amount of time spent in household work which can be used in other fruitful ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the broad relationship between appliance ownership and housework, and your comparison of housework falling from 50 hours to about 10–11 hours is relevant. However, the task asks for a summary of both charts, and the appliance trends are only partly reported: you give an approximate starting figure for washing machines and vacuum cleaners but omit their later levels and the refrigerator’s rise to full ownership. The claim that refrigerators became popular in the “late 1920’s” is not supported by the chart, which shows a sharp increase by 1940. Your overview also focuses on a possible cause and benefit rather than clearly summarising the main data patterns. Include the key endpoints and notable plateaus or fluctuations to make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an opening statement, a paragraph about appliance ownership and housework, and a concluding overview. The ideas are generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Similarly” and “As a result” help connect points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some movement towards more flexible progression. However, the second paragraph combines background speculation, appliance trends and the housework figure without a clear sequence of comparisons. The final paragraph repeats the opening idea rather than adding a concise data-focused overview. Organise the body by chart or by key trends, and use explicit comparisons between years so the links between details are clearer and less dependent on broad transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “ownership,” “appliances,” “reduced” and “household work,” and the main meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “came in handy” and “fruitful ways.” However, some choices are informal or imprecise for an academic report: “way more easier,” “hike in the purchase,” and “started as well” do not describe the chart data naturally. “Purchase” also suggests buying activity rather than the proportion of households owning appliances. Spelling errors such as “habb it” (written as “habbit”) and the awkward phrase “spend more time on ourselves” reduce accuracy. Prefer precise trend language such as “rose,” “increased,” “reached” and “remained stable.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a subordinate clause in “as people started to work” and a result clause beginning “As a result of owning these appliances.” Most sentences communicate their general meaning, which is consistent with this level. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening has faulty comparative structure in “way more easier,” and “has made our lives comfortable and spend more time” lacks parallel construction and a clear subject for “spend.” In “from 1920’s washing machines and vacuum cleaners were seen,” the introductory time phrase is awkwardly attached, and the plural possessive form is unnecessary. Check parallel verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries, and use consistent past-tense reporting for historical data.
