IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The first line chart illustrates the transformation in types of electrical appliances - washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner- people generally own and the second chart shows the time allocated by people for houseworks in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the onwership of refregerator increased from the lowest of time reaching the pick. the owners of vacuum cleaner also reached the similar position despite starting from a little higher position. On the other hand, the number of users and usage of washing machine fluctuated over time reaching a little higher than the beginning percentage.
Looking at the chart in more details, it can be seen that washing machine was used in household by 40% of owners,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the two charts and attempts an overview, noting that refrigerator ownership rose from the lowest level to a peak and that vacuum-cleaner ownership also increased. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: refrigerators reached 100%, while vacuum cleaners also reached 100%, rather than merely a “similar position”; washing-machine ownership fluctuated only slightly after its initial rise. Most importantly, the report stops after beginning to describe the 1920 washing-machine figure, so it omits nearly all supporting data, including the sharp fall in housework hours from 50 to 11 per week. It also contains only 122 words, below the required 150. To improve, complete the report with key comparisons and accurate figures for both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph intended to give details. The opening also makes the relationship between the two charts clear. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph ends after “40% of owners,” leaving the information incomplete and preventing a logical comparison of the trends. The overview’s ideas are difficult to follow, particularly “increased from the lowest of time reaching the pick,” and the transition “On the other hand” does not clearly signal a contrast between the appliance trends. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and the main details, and organise the figures by trend or by chart. Clear links such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile” would help readers follow comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “electrical appliances,” “ownership,” “fluctuated,” and “percentage,” and it attempts to describe trends rather than simply list labels. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear: “the lowest of time,” “reached the pick,” and “owners of vacuum cleaner” do not express the intended comparisons naturally. There are also spelling errors in “onwership” and “refregerator,” and “houseworks” is not the appropriate form. These errors make parts of the overview difficult to understand. Build a more precise range of trend language, such as “rose steadily,” “levelled off,” and “declined,” and check spelling and common collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a range of sentence forms, including a complex opening with a dash-separated list and an overview using “On the other hand.” Some basic grammatical relationships are understandable, but errors are frequent enough to make several sentences awkward or unclear. For example, “the time allocated by people for houseworks” has an incorrect plural construction, while “the ownership of refrigerator increased” lacks an article and uses an awkward singular noun phrase. The sentence beginning “Overall” also shifts into a lower-case fragment after a full stop (“the owners…”), and the final sentence is left incomplete. Practise accurate articles, singular and plural forms, and complete sentence boundaries; then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
