Student answer (Band 4.5)

The line chart below illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time doing housework in household in one region between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it is clear that refrigerator had the greater proportion of housholds with electrical power appliances while vacuum clear had the considerable percentage.

From 1920 to 2019, refrigerator increased significantly from 0 to approximately 60 between 1920 and 1940 while washing machine rose from 40 to 60. Vaccum cleaner inclined from 20 to 70 from 1920 to 1960

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the general topic and reports a few changes, including the rise in refrigerator ownership and washing-machine ownership between 1920 and 1940. However, it is far too incomplete to summarise the charts: it gives no account of housework hours, omits most later-year trends, and provides no meaningful overview of the overall patterns. The overview claim that refrigerators had the greatest proportion is not accurate for 1920, when washing machines were more common, and “vacuum clear had the considerable percentage” is unclear. Some figures are also misreported: refrigerators were about 2%, not 0%, in 1920, and vacuum cleaners rose from about 30% to 70% by 1960, rather than 20% to 70%. The response is 74 words, below the 150-word minimum; develop a complete overview and select key comparisons from both charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an introductory sentence, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a paragraph describing changes over time. The sequence from the starting years to later years is partly understandable, and “while” makes one comparison. However, the response ends abruptly in the middle of the chart’s timeline, so there is no clear progression through the full period or coverage of the second chart. Connections between ideas are limited, and the overview sentence is difficult to follow because its two claims are not clearly related. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the overview and the main details, then group comparisons by trend or period and use clear links such as “by contrast” and “thereafter.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased significantly,” “rose,” and “proportion,” so the reader can recognise the intended subject. However, the range is narrow and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unclear: “vacuum clear” appears to mean “vacuum cleaner,” “inclined” is not a natural verb for a rising figure, and “electrical power appliances” is an awkward phrase. There are also spelling errors in “housholds” and “Vaccum,” which reduce precision. Aim for standard, accurate chart language and avoid repeating general verbs. For example, describe a figure as “the percentage of households owning a refrigerator” and use “climbed” or “increased” for upward trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes a few simple sentence patterns and attempts a more complex comparison with “while,” but the range is limited and grammatical control is uneven. In the opening, “the changes in ownership … and amount of time” needs a parallel structure, such as “the changes in ownership … and in the amount of time.” The phrase “in household” also needs a plural or possessive form, and “refrigerator had the greater proportion” is missing an article before the singular count noun. The final sentence lacks a full stop, and the time references are not consistently expressed in a clear sentence structure. Practise accurate articles, plurals, and complete sentences, then add varied structures for comparing trends.
