Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and time spent doing housework in households from 1920 to 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the overall rise in appliance ownership and the fall in housework time, and you report several key figures, including the vacuum cleaner reaching 100% by 2000 and the washing machine ending at 75%. However, the overview is incomplete: saying all appliances increased overlooks the washing machine’s dip between 1960 and 1980, and the refrigerator’s rise is not the only major trend. Some figures are inaccurate: the refrigerator began at about 2%, not 0%, and housework ended at about 11 hours, rather than 10. The response also contains 143 words, below the 150-word minimum. Develop the overview and include clearer comparisons between the series.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing appliance ownership and housework. The sequence from 1920 onward is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Moreover” help signal shifts between appliances. However, the overview mostly lists the appliances rather than summarising the main patterns, and the body moves between series without a fully consistent comparison. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “kept on increasing.” Grouping the appliance trends together with direct comparisons, then describing the housework trend separately, would create a more purposeful progression. Ensure each paragraph develops one clear focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “ownership,” “remained the same,” “increasing,” and “declined,” so the main information is understandable. However, the range is limited and some choices are awkward or imprecise: “the most increasing electronics” does not naturally describe the refrigerator’s trend, while “was started at” is an unsuitable phrase for a data series. There is also a spelling error in “numver,” and “andvacuum” lacks a space. Repeated use of “increasing” and “kept on” makes the account less precise. Use standard trend language and vary verbs such as “rose,” “climbed,” “fell,” and “levelled off” to describe changes accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including a sentence that contrasts the washing-machine trend with “However.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “All of them were increased” uses an incorrect passive form; write “All of them increased.” In “washing machine was started at 40,” the article and verb construction are faulty, and “after a slight declined” uses the wrong grammatical form. There are also agreement and number issues in “the number of hours … were” and “50hours.” Aim for accurate past-tense descriptions, correct articles, and consistent singular agreement. These corrections would make the varied sentence forms more controlled.
