Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line chart compares different types of electronic appliances owned by people in 1920 till 2019. Accompanying line chart shows the number of hours people spent doing house chores per week.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that refrigerator has become the most owned appliance over the years, nowadays, it becomes a mandatory part of the house. House chores took more amount of time in the previous years but now it declined to only few hours per week.

Although proportions of refrigerator had reached a peak in 1960 with the ownership of 90% of the housholds, it became a mandatory appliance in a house in 1980 till 2019. Vacuum cleaner rose steadily from 1920 till 2000 rising from 30% to 100%. Washing machine showed flatuations in the ownership, as proportions gradually increased to 70%, it suffered a fall before rising up to approximately 75% of the ownership in 2019.

In early age, people spent 50 hours per week in housework. A slope is shown in numbers reached to only 20 hours per week which further declined gradually to reach at 10 hours by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and identify the main broad patterns: appliance ownership generally increased, while weekly housework declined. You also select useful comparisons, including refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980 and vacuum cleaners rising to 100% by 2000. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators reached 90% in 1960, but their ownership continued rising to 100% in 1980; the overview’s claim that they are “the most owned” is not consistently true, since vacuum cleaners also reached 100%. The washing-machine trend is described as fluctuating, but its small dip from 70% to 65% and subsequent recovery could be reported more precisely. The housework figure of about 10 hours in 2019 is close to the chart. More exact comparisons and a clearer overview would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Although” and “In early age” signal movement between points. However, some links are awkward or unclear. The sentence beginning “Although proportions of refrigerator…” does not complete a clear contrast, and “A slope is shown in numbers” does not explain the downward trend naturally. The overview also combines several ideas in a long sentence, making the comparison less direct. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each figure explicitly to its trend—for example, state that housework hours fell sharply at first, then levelled off before declining again.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “proportions,” “fluctuations,” “declined” and “gradually,” which allows you to describe the main trends. Some less common choices are attempted, but several are inaccurate or unnatural: “electronic appliances” is less precise than “electrical appliances,” “house chores” and “house chores took more amount of time” are awkward, and “mandatory part of the house” overstates what the chart shows. There are also spelling errors, including “housholds” and “flatuations.” Aim for accurate collocations and concise trend language, such as “household ownership,” “became universal,” and “the figure fell.” This would make the description more precise without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including “Although proportions of refrigerator had reached a peak…” and “Washing machine showed fluctuations…,” so there is some structural variety. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and number are inconsistent in phrases such as “refrigerator has become” and “proportions of refrigerator”; the latter also needs a more suitable plural construction. The sentence “A slope is shown in numbers reached to only 20 hours” has a faulty structure, while “it declined to only few hours” is missing an article. Tense and agreement also need attention in “it became a mandatory appliance… in 1980 till 2019.” Practise forming direct comparisons with accurate subjects and verbs, such as “Housework fell to 20 hours by 1960.”
