cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the ownership of three appliances by different households in one country. The other graph demonstrates the number of hours devoted to household jobs per week from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, all the ownership of all three appliances increased substantially. Although the percentage increase in washing machines was less as cpared to refrigerators and vacuum cleaners.

In 1920, The washing machines was most owned appliance which was owned by 40% of household, following that vacuum cleaners were 30%. However the refrigerators were almost absent in 1920. As few years passed by there was a significatn increase in ownership of refrigerators, climbing up to 90% by 1960. Eventually, it reaches to 100% by 1980 and remain consisten all the way up to 2019. This increase however had a converse effect on the hours devoted for housework.

It was clear that with the increase in proportion of electric appliances the manual work declined a great deal. The vacuum cleaners also became universal with every passing year reaching up to 100% in 2000 and remained same untill 2019. On the other hand washing machines ownership rises gradually and reached to almost 73% in 2019.

The hours given to household jobs such as cleaning, washing and cooking were more with almost 50 hours in 1920. However with the rise of trend of electric appliances these hours eventually decreased and reached to almost 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while time spent on housework fell. The response also selects useful comparisons, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners becoming universal by 2000. Most reported figures are consistent with the chart, and “almost 10” hours in 2019 is a reasonable approximation of 11. To make the account more fully developed, include the washing-machine dip from 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980, and give a clearer sequence of housework figures, such as the fall from 50 hours to 20 by 1960 before levelling at 15. Avoid implying a direct causal relationship: the charts show trends occurring alongside one another, not proof that appliance ownership caused the decline.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to appliance details and then housework, and its main comparisons are generally easy to follow. Paragraphing helps separate the information. You also use linking expressions such as “However,” “On the other hand,” and “Eventually.” At times, though, the progression is weakened by repetition: the decline in housework is mentioned in the appliance paragraph and then explained again in the final paragraph. Some links are also imprecise, particularly “This increase however had a converse effect,” which presents a causal connection not established by the charts. Grouping the appliance trends together and then describing the housework trend once, with clear time markers, would make cohesion more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “proportion,” “declined,” and “remained,” and the reader can understand the main trends. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “devoted to household jobs.” However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise: “all the ownership” and “the percentage increase … was less” do not express the intended comparison naturally, while “manual work” is not an exact substitute for housework. Spelling errors such as “significatn” and “untill” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling; for example, describe ownership as “the proportion of households owning each appliance” and housework time as “hours spent on domestic tasks.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “However,” and “with the increase,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with articles, agreement, and verb forms. For example, “The washing machines was most owned appliance” has problems with number and article use; “it reaches to 100% … and remain” shifts tense and lacks agreement; and “washing machines ownership rises” needs a possessive form and consistent past tense. Capitalisation after sentence breaks is also inconsistent, as in “In 1920, The…”. Use past tense consistently for the historical data, check singular and plural subjects, and proofread articles and punctuation. These corrections would make your varied sentence forms more accurate.
