Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart compare the changes in ownership of washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner along with their amount of time spent in housework per week in a country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the largest increase was observed in the usage of refrigerator in the households from 1920 to 2019. Vacuum cleaner stood along refrigerator, being the electrical appliance in the highest percentage of households. On the other hand, usage of washing machine declined and the lowest number of households have it.

At first, in 1920, there was no household with a refrigerator. But the scenario changed quickly and within 1940, more than 50% household had a refrigerator. By 1960, almost all home had a refrigerator (90%) and in 1980, this appliance reached all the housholds. Even in 2019, the trend continued and the presence of refrigerator in households was 100%. However, vacuum cleaner was in 30% households in 1920 unlike refrigerator. From then on, the usage showed a linear growth and vacuum cleaner was in 100% household by 2000 which continued to 2019.

In contrast, washing machine had the largest share among the appliances in 1920 (40%). The demand increased with time but it was not as steep as others. By 1960, it reached 70% but after that there was a fall in 1980. Then the percentage recovered and reached above 70% in 2019. The number of hours per week was 50 in 1920. After that there was a drastic fall upto 1960 and then it became almost steady. Finally, the number of hours reduced to 10 in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all four series and give a clear overview of the main contrast: refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership rose, while housework time fell. Several figures are accurately selected, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners by 2000. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: washing-machine ownership did not decline overall, and it was not the least common appliance in 2019; it rose from 40% to 75%, while the other two reached 100%. The claim that no household had a refrigerator in 1920 also overstates the chart’s 2%. Your account of housework time is relevant but could compare its steady periods more precisely. These errors limit the precision of an otherwise relevant summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses in a sensible order. Contrasts such as “On the other hand” and “In contrast” help distinguish the appliance trends, while time markers guide the reader through the years. The grouping of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners together, followed by washing machines and housework hours, is also workable. At times, however, the links between ideas are mechanical or unclear: “Vacuum cleaner stood along refrigerator” does not clearly express the comparison, and “After that” is used repeatedly without specifying the period. A more precise overview and clearer references would make the progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “linear growth,” “share,” and “drastic fall,” and the reader can understand the trends you describe. There are also attempts to vary wording through “presence,” “demand,” and “usage.” Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “usage” is not the best term for household ownership, and “stood along refrigerator” is not a natural comparison. Spelling slips such as “vaccum” and “housholds” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling; for example, describe the proportion of households that “owned” an appliance rather than its “usage.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “but,” “however” and “after that.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The chart compares,” and “more than 50% household had” needs a plural noun and determiner, such as “more than 50% of households had.” There are also article and agreement problems in “almost all home had” and “the lowest number of households have it.” Tense control is not always consistent when describing past data, as in “the lowest number … have it.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and past-tense reporting to make the sentence patterns more consistently accurate.
