cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are two charts given in the question. One illustrates the percentage of households with electronic devices and the other describes the number of hours of housework per week per household between 1920 and 2019 for both cases.

Overall, the 1st graphs shows how many households uses the washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner over the years. In 1920, there was almost no use of refrigerator in the households but after 20 years the use of refrigerators increased daramticall; from 0% to almost 55% of the households started using refrigerator. Then over the years it increased gradually and from 1980 about 100% of the households were dependent on refrigerators and it remained static over the years till 2019. On the other hand, the changes for washing machine had an updown phase. At 1920, about 40% of the households used washing machine. After a gradual increase, in the year 1980 the percentage dropped to 63% from 70% and then it again had a gradual increase. The vaccum cleaner followed the pattern like the refrigerator. In 1920, its percentage was 30% , then it had a gradual increase and after 2000 year almost 100% of the households used vaccum cleaner.

However, the 2nd graph illustrates how many hours of housework is done per week overthe years from 1920 to 2019. The highest value is 50 hours of housework per week which was done in the year of 1920 and the lowest value is 11 hours which was done in the 2019. After 1920, the number of hourse decreased drastically and stopped at 20 in 1960. Then it started deceasing slightly and remained same for two decades till 2000.

Hence, it can be said that as the percentage of electronic appliances increased, the number of hours of housework per week decreased over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and identify their main relationship: appliance ownership generally rose while housework hours fell. Several key figures are reported accurately, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and housework declining from 50 hours in 1920 to 11 in 2019. However, some details are imprecise or incomplete: the washing-machine figure falls to about 65% in 1980, not 63%, and the housework figure is 15 hours in 1980 and 2000, rather than merely saying it stayed the same “for two decades.” The overview is also implicit rather than clearly summarising the contrasting overall trends. To strengthen this response, state that overview directly and compare the series more selectively, including the vacuum cleaner’s rise to full ownership by 2000 and the washing machine’s modest fluctuations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, discussion of appliance ownership, a paragraph on housework, and a concluding comparison. This makes the information generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “On the other hand” and “However” help signal shifts. At times, though, the organisation is less effective because the first main paragraph contains several long descriptions without a clear grouping of the most important comparisons. The conclusion repeats the general relationship rather than adding a concise overview, and “Hence” is not needed after the preceding summary. Improve progression by giving a distinct overview after the introduction, then grouping the appliance trends and housework trend in focused paragraphs, using comparisons to connect related figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “gradual increase,” “remained static,” and “decreased drastically.” These choices communicate the main trends, but some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “use” and “increased” recur, while “dependent on refrigerators” does not accurately describe household ownership. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “vaccum,” “daramticall,” “hourse,” and “deceasing,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for more precise trend language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the proportion of households that “owned” an appliance, and distinguish a sharp rise from a gradual one rather than relying on the same general verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “but,” “after,” and “as,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. For example, “the 1st graphs shows” should use a singular noun and matching verb, while “how many households uses” requires agreement between the subject and verb. The phrase “the number of hours of housework is done” is also awkwardly formed; a clearer structure is “the number of hours spent doing housework.” There are occasional article and punctuation problems, such as inconsistent commas around figures. Review agreement and build more controlled comparisons, while retaining the complex sentences you already attempt.
