cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this report we will able to know about the ratio of household items (electrical appliances) used and the hours required to do housework per year between 1920 and 2019 decade by decade.

The percentage of household items such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner were at peak in 2019 which significantly affected the house working hours. As the ownership of these appliances become high/rised in every house the number of working hours in every house get drastically changed yearly and in 2019 it was very low.

Between 1920 and 1940 the percentage of household items were about to get starting rise near 50 to 60% and then during 1960 it went above the average and became 70 to 80% but 90% for the refrigerator and then after 2000 it went near 100% but 70% for washing machine. Because of this the number of hours consumed by house work started decreasing from 50 hours in 1920 to 20 hours (per year) in 1960 and in the end of 2000 it was near 10 to 15 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad relationship shown: appliance ownership generally rose while weekly housework time fell, and you include several relevant figures, such as 50 hours in 1920 and 20 in 1960. However, the account is only partial and some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. The charts show refrigerator ownership reaching 100% by 1980 and remaining there, while vacuum cleaner ownership reaches 100% by 2000; these distinct trends are blurred in the statement that items were near 100% after 2000. Washing-machine ownership also fluctuated, falling from 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980 before rising. The overview should clearly summarise these differences and the housework decline, which ends at about 11 hours in 2019. Avoid implying a direct causal effect that the charts do not establish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, a general statement about the trends, and a paragraph describing changes over time. This gives the reader some overall organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several appliances and years are grouped together without precise comparisons. For example, the final paragraph moves from appliance percentages to housework hours and back to appliance ownership, making the relationships harder to follow. Linking phrases such as “Because of this” also suggest a cause-and-effect connection that the data alone cannot confirm. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for instance, describe the three appliance trends together, then report the decline in housework hours—and use time markers consistently to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “ownership,” “appliances,” and “housework,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “household items were at peak,” “house working hours,” and “hours consumed by house work.” The phrase “near 50 to 60%” is also unclear, while “yearly” does not accurately describe the chart’s selected years. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to interpret. Aim for standard chart language and precise collocations, such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “weekly hours spent on housework.” Check word forms and spelling, including “rose” rather than “rised.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a time clause beginning “Between 1920 and 1940” and a sentence linking appliance ownership with housework hours. However, grammatical errors recur and sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “we will able to know” is missing “be,” and “the percentage … were” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Verb forms are also inconsistent in “become high/rised” and “get drastically changed.” The sentence beginning “As the ownership…” would be clearer with a consistent past-tense structure, since the chart reports historical data. Practise accurate agreement, past-tense verbs, and complete sentence patterns; these corrections would make your comparisons easier to understand.
