Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad decline in housework and note that vacuum-cleaner ownership rose to 100%, but the response only partially covers the charts. It omits the refrigerator trend entirely and gives little account of the appliance figures across the period. The overview is also unclear: washing machines were not the most widely owned appliance in 1920, since their 40% exceeded vacuum cleaners at 30%, but the response does not compare all three appliances or explain the overall pattern. The housework figure of about 10 hours in 2019 is broadly accurate, though it is incorrectly described as a percentage. The response contains 116 words, below the required 150, and this limits the detail and comparisons reported. Add a clear overview and select key figures for each series.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, beginning with an introduction and then grouping appliance information before discussing housework. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the appliance paragraph moves from washing machines to vacuum cleaners without a clear comparison, and the housework details are presented as a sequence rather than a concise account of the trend. Some connectors, including “Additionally” and “Furthermore,” are repetitive or do not establish a meaningful relationship between points. Organise the report into a clear overview followed by paragraphs comparing the appliance trends and the housework figures, and use linking words only where they clarify the relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “proportion,” “hours per week,” and “decreased,” so the main subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “usage of washing machine was on top,” “second of rank,” and “minimum share of hours spending.” These choices make parts of the report difficult to interpret, especially when describing hours as a “share” or “percentage.” Aim for precise chart language, for example “the proportion of households owning…” and “weekly housework time fell to…”. Vary the verbs used to describe trends and use standard collocations rather than repeatedly relying on “highest,” “maximum,” and “reached.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentences and uses time references, but the range is limited and complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “the usage of washing machine was on top in 1920 was about 40% however, it reached highest proportion was about 74%” combines clauses without a workable grammatical structure. In “it’s reached was about 35 hours,” the verb pattern is incorrect, while “time spent doing housework households” is missing a necessary grammatical link. Commas are also used where sentence boundaries or conjunctions are needed. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning hard to follow. Build accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled comparisons using forms such as “rose from… to…” and “while…”.
