Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the broad topic and mentions several relevant features, including the rise in refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership and the fall in housework time. However, the account is substantially inaccurate and incomplete: housework time did not increase to 60 hours in 1920; it began at about 50 and then declined. The claim that it was around 40 hours in 1960 is also incorrect; it was about 20. The description of appliance ownership in 1940 as “steadily constant” does not match the changing figures, and the overview misses the main contrast between near-universal appliance ownership by 2019 and reduced housework. The response is also 21 words below the required minimum. Select the main trends accurately and support them with key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the report chronologically, moving from 1920 through 1940 and 1960 to 2019, and the final paragraph returns to the end-point comparison. This gives the reader some sense of sequence. However, the response has no clear overview paragraph, and the progression is weakened by long, crowded sentences that combine several years and trends. Connectors such as “but,” “lastly,” and “where as” are used mechanically or do not clarify the relationship between ideas. The reference to “the number of work per hour” is also unclear. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and supporting details, and group the appliance trends apart from housework hours.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “gradually decreasing,” “intersected,” and “same level,” so the reader can recognise the intended subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the data difficult to interpret. “Percentage of household per year” is not a natural description of the chart, while “number of work per hour” confuses hours of housework per week with work per hour. “Percentage of work hour increased” is also unclear. Spelling and spacing problems, including “vaccum” and “steadly,” further reduce precision. Build a small set of accurate chart terms—such as “households owning,” “ownership rose,” and “hours spent on housework”—and use them consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to link ideas in longer sentences, for example with “but” and “whereas,” and uses past-tense forms such as “decreased.” However, the longer structures are often faulty, and the limited sentence patterns make relationships between figures hard to follow. Examples include “it is clear thatin 1920 percentage…” and “the number of work per hour also increasing,” where sentence structure and verb forms are incomplete or unclear. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and agreement in phrases such as “percentage of household” and “the refrigerator and vaccum cleaner were at same level.” Practise writing short, complete comparisons first, then combine them with accurate clauses and punctuation.
