cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Given are two line graphs describing the percentage of households with electrical appliances which are washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner and number of hours of housework per week in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, proportion of all three electrical appliances usage was significantly increased during the century and refrigerator and vaccum cleaner were highly used. The number of hours of housework per week gradually declined over the given time period.

The refrigerator usage was near zero in 1920, which dramatically increased until 1980. It peaked at 100% in 1980. Then figure remained steady until 2019. In 1920, 30% of people had ownership of vaccum cleaners, which significantly increased and peaked at 100% in 2000. It maintained at there till 2019. Moreover, in1920, highest percentage of household had washing machines apprximately 40%. However, it reported the lowest percentage from all three at the end of 2019 around 72%. The usage of washing machines were slowly increased until 1960 followed by mild up and down trend.

Regarding number of hours of housework per week recorded 50 hours in 1920, which was the highest and followed gradual decline over time and it was 10 hours in 2019

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You provide a clear overview of the main patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework declined. The key trends are supported with relevant figures, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching that level by 2000. You also identify the washing machine’s slight fluctuations and its lower final figure. However, there are a few inaccuracies or imprecisions: washing-machine ownership was about 75% in 2019, rather than around 72%, and it was not the lowest of all three at the end, since refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were both at 100%. The housework figure is about 11 hours in 2019, not 10. These do not obscure the overall picture, but more precise comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, separate discussion of appliance ownership, and a final sentence on housework. This gives the reader a logical progression through the two graphs, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. The appliance details are mostly grouped together, while the housework trend is distinguished at the end. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the shift from the washing-machine description to the final housework sentence, which feels abrupt. The phrase “Regarding number of hours…” also lacks a complete introductory structure. A more balanced paragraph for housework and clearer transitions between series would make the organisation more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “gradually declined,” “dramatically increased,” “peaked,” “remained steady,” and “trend.” These choices communicate the main movements and show some flexibility beyond basic repetition. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “proportion of … appliances usage,” “highly used,” and “maintained at there.” “Ownership” or “the proportion of households owning” would be more natural than “usage” when describing the chart, while “levelled off” is a concise alternative to “maintained at there.” Spelling errors in “vacuum” and “approximately,” along with the compressed “in1920,” also reduce accuracy. More precise collocations would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and time relationships such as “until 1980” and “followed by.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “proportion of all three electrical appliances usage was significantly increased” has problems with articles, noun structure, and verb form; “The usage of washing machines were” has subject–verb disagreement; and “Regarding number of hours…” is an incomplete construction. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “highest percentage of household.” Aim for a clear subject and verb in each sentence, and check agreement and article use. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts more effective.
