Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The first line chart illustrate the changes in ownership of three electrical appliances (washing machine, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner) and the second shows the time spent doing housework in one country between 1920 and 2019
Overall, the figure showed an uprising pattern in percentage of households with electrical appliances. On the other hand, the figure for number of hours spent doing housework decreased steadily over the period.
At the start of the period, only 40% of household owned washing machine in 1920. The figure fluctuated between 1940 and 2000 . In 2019 it reached at more than 70%.
In 1920 30% of household owned vacuum cleaner. The figure increased steadily over the period. In 2000 it reached at 100% and was stable between 2000 and 2019.
In terms of refrigerator the figure also showed an increasing pattern. In 1920 its started with near 0%. It rose dramatically over the period and reached at 100% in 2019.
By contrast, the number of hours spent doing housework fell steadily over the period. In 1920 its started with 50 hour per week while, it fell at 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and give a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework hours declined. The main trends are mostly accurate, including the refrigerator’s rise from almost zero to full ownership and the vacuum cleaner reaching 100% by 2000. Some details, however, are imprecise or incomplete. Washing-machine ownership did not simply fluctuate between 1940 and 2000: it rose from 60% to 70%, dipped to about 65% in 1980, then recovered. The final figure was about 75%, rather than merely “more than 70%.” Housework fell from 50 to about 11 hours, not 10. The response reports the key series but gives limited comparisons and detail, so a more precise account of intermediate changes would strengthen it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, separate descriptions of the appliance trends, and a final paragraph on housework. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In terms of refrigerator,” and “By contrast” help signal the relationships between points. The progression is generally logical, though the appliance paragraphs read as separate summaries rather than being compared directly. For example, you could group the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner because both reached 100%, then contrast their different timelines with the washing machine. Some linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “the figure” and “over the period.” More varied referencing and clearer comparisons would make the cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased steadily,” “rose dramatically,” and “fell steadily.” These choices communicate the broad trends, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “an uprising pattern” is not a natural way to describe a trend, and “reached at” is used repeatedly where “reached” is needed. “The figure fluctuated” also overstates the washing-machine pattern, which involved a modest dip followed by recovery. Repetition of “figure” and “over the period” limits flexibility. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, such as “the proportion of households,” “peaked at,” or “levelled off,” where the data supports them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the main information using a mix of simple statements and some longer structures, including the contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “The first line chart illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “40% of household owned washing machine” needs plural and article forms. “In 1920 its started” has an incorrect pronoun and verb form, and “it fell at 10 hours” uses an unsuitable preposition in the sentence pattern. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then add controlled complex sentences using comparisons and time clauses; this will improve range without sacrificing clarity.
