Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework time, and you include an overview. However, several key details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators rise from about 2% in 1920 to 100% by 1980, not from 0% to around 90% in 1920; the 90% figure is for 1960. Vacuum-cleaner ownership reaches 100% only by 2000, rather than rising to that level across the whole period. The overview also incorrectly calls washing machines the lowest, although they are not consistently the least common appliance. The housework figure is hours, not a percentage. The response is 145 words, below the required 150, with nine prompt words excluded from the count. Select the main trends accurately and support them with clearer comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing appliance ownership and housework. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the appliance paragraph is difficult to follow because the refrigerator figures are presented out of sequence, and several ideas are compressed into long sentences. Linking words such as “Moreover” and “However” are used, but the relationships they signal are not always clear. The final sentence, “The line chart continues to decline,” repeats the preceding point rather than adding a useful comparison. Group the appliance trends in a consistent order, use one sentence for each main comparison, and avoid repeating information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “remained constant,” “fluctuated,” “dramatically,” and “decline,” so the response can communicate the general trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “households work on electricity,” “refrigerator use in household,” and “number of housework.” Repeated use of “jump” and “slightly” also makes descriptions imprecise, while spelling errors such as “onwership,” “housewrok,” “waching,” and “vaccum” are noticeable. Use standard terms such as “ownership,” “the proportion of households,” and “hours of housework,” and choose verbs that match the size and direction of each change.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including clauses linked with “whereas” and “but.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “between 1920 to 2019” uses an incorrect preposition pattern, and “the number of housework … kept decreasing” has an incorrect noun construction and verb agreement. Tense and sentence structure are also inconsistent in “In 1920 refrigerator use … dramatically increases” and “Use of refrigerator around 1960 steadily increase.” Capitalisation and punctuation errors, including “Overall, The” and missing spaces after full stops, further affect accuracy. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter, complete sentences before adding complex clauses.
