Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart illustrates the changes in ownership of eletronic devices and amount of time used doing housework in households from 1920 to 2019 in a particular country.

Overall, the usage of refrigerator increased sharply, whereas vaccum cleaner and washing machine rose gradually, but later washing machine maintained stable trend throughout the given period. In contrast, the number of hours in housework was initially high, however decreased with the following years.

In 1920, the changes in refrigerator was 0% increased to 100% in 1980 and remained stable till 2000, while the vacuum cleaner gradully increased from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2020, and maintained an unchangeable trend. In contrast, washing machine started at 40% in 1920 and rose till 1960

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the overall contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours, and you correctly note that refrigerators eventually reached full household ownership. However, the report is incomplete and covers the data only minimally: it stops while describing washing machines, gives no figures for housework after the initial overview, and omits the later washing-machine pattern. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators began at about 2%, not 0%, and vacuum-cleaner ownership reached 100% by 2000, not 2020. The overview also says washing-machine ownership was stable, although it fluctuated slightly. The response is 29 words below the required minimum. Include a complete account of the main trends and key comparisons, supported by accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and contrast markers such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph ends abruptly after “rose till 1960,” leaving the washing-machine trend and much of the chart unreported. Some links are awkward or unclear: “In 1920, the changes in refrigerator was 0% increased to 100%” does not clearly connect the starting value to the later trend. The overview also combines several trends in a long sentence, making the comparisons harder to follow. Use separate, logically ordered sentences for each appliance and the housework figures, and ensure the report has a clear ending.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “increased sharply,” “remained stable,” “gradually” and “in contrast,” so the reader can understand the broad trends. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing data. “Usage of refrigerator” should refer to ownership, while “time used doing housework” is better expressed as time spent on housework. “Unchangeable trend” and “the changes in refrigerator” are also awkward. Spelling errors such as “eletronic,” “vaccum” and “gradully” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “the number of hours spent on housework,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast structure with “whereas” and a clause beginning “while.” Some sentence patterns communicate the main trends, but errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction are frequent enough to make parts difficult to interpret. For example, “the changes in refrigerator was 0% increased to 100%” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the subject and the increase, and “washing machine started at 40% in 1920 and rose till 1960” is incomplete because the rise has no stated value. The overview sentence beginning “In contrast” also joins ideas awkwardly. Build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check singular/plural agreement and punctuation.
