Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
THE GIVEN LINE CHARTS ILLUSTRATE THE PERCENTAGE OF HOUSEHOLDS WITH ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES SUCH AS WASHING MACHINE,REFRIGERATOR AND VACUUM CLEANER , WHILE NUMBER OF HOURS OF HOUSEWORK PERWEEK, PER HOUSEHOLD IN ONE COUNTRY BETWEEN 1920 AND 2019.
OVERALL , IT CAN BE OBSERVED THAT OVER THE PERIOD THE USE OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IN HOUSEHOLDS SAW A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE, WHILE THE TIME DEVOTED TO HOUSEWORKS WITNESSED A DRAMATIC DECLINED.
IN 1920, WASHING MASHINE WAS THE MOST COMMON APPLIANCES AT 40%, FOLLOWED BY VACUMN CLEANER AT 30%, WHILE REFRIGERATOR WAS ALMOST 0%. OVER THE PERIOD, ALL TIME INCREASED REFRIGERATOR SHOWED THE BIGGEST GROWTH TO 90% IN 1960 AND REACHED 100% IN 1980, VACUMN CLEANER ALSO ROSE SHARPLY FROM 70% IN 1960 FROM 100% IN 2019,WHEREAS WASHING MACHINE GREW SLOWLY FROM 60% IN 1980 TO 77% IN 2019.
IN 1920, HOUSEHOLDS SPENT AROUND 50 HOURS PER WEEK IN HOUSEWORKS. THIS FIGGURE DROPPED SLIGHTLY AT 32 HOURS IN 1940 AND TO 20 HOURS IN 1960.AFTER THAT, THE DECLINED WAS THE MORE GRADUAL, FALLING TO 9 HOURS IN 1980, 7 HOURS IN 2000, AND FINALLY TO JUST ABOUT 12 HOURS IN 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a relevant overview of the main contrast: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell substantially. You also select useful starting points and milestones, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and the decline in housework from about 50 hours. This covers the task well, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: housework was about 15 hours in both 1980 and 2000, then around 11 in 2019, not 9, 7 and 12. The washing-machine figure was about 65% in 1980 and 75% in 2019, rather than 60% and 77%. The vacuum-cleaner rise should be described from 70% in 1960 to 100% by 2000. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the later housework trend would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a summary of the broad trends, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and transitions such as “while,” “followed by,” and “after that” help connect comparisons and stages. Some links are less effective because the wording is unclear, particularly “Over the period, all time increased refrigerator showed the biggest growth,” which makes the relationship between the trends difficult to follow. The appliance paragraph also packs several figures into one long sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise the appliance comparisons in a more controlled sequence, for example by grouping the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner trends before contrasting the washing machine.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “most common,” “biggest growth,” “rose sharply,” and “falling.” These choices help describe changes and comparisons, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “the use of electrical appliances” is less precise than ownership, “houseworks” is not the natural form, and “dramatic declined” uses the wrong form. There are also spelling errors such as “mashine,” “vacumn,” and “figgure,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise trend language and check spelling and word forms; this will make the report sound more natural and suitably formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “while” and a sequence introduced by “after that.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “while number of hours” needs an article, and “the declined was the more gradual” has problems with the noun form and comparative structure. The sentence beginning “Over the period” is also difficult to parse because its clauses are not joined clearly. Punctuation and spacing around commas are inconsistent, and several sentences run together. Practise building accurate comparison clauses and checking articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries; clearer structures will help you express the data more reliably.
