IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts illustrate proportion of housholds owning three electrical appliances ( washing machine, refrigerator, vaccum cleaner ) and the number of hours spent per week doing housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, all three of the machines usage have gone up significantly since 1920 with refrigerator and vaccum cleaner being present in every household since 2000.Consequently the time needed for housework has dramatically decreased in the time period.
in 1920, only 30% of the households had owned a vaccum cleaner. That number steadily increased every year finally reaching 100% in 2000. On the other hand, none of the households had a refrigerator in 1920. But the popularity of it skyrocketed in the following years reaching 90% ownership in the households in 1960 then finally reaching 100% in 1980. Lastly washing machine were the most popular machine in 1920 among all three being present in 40% of the households. Initially people also started buying washing machine like the other electrical appliances reaching 70% of the households in 1960 then suddenly diping to about 65% in 1980. Subsequently 70% of the household again had washing machine in 2000. Finally on the final year about 75% of the households owned a washing machine.
In 1920, people had to spend 50 hours each week in order to complete their housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals, cleaning. But with the usage of these electrical appliances the number of hours needed for housework gradually decreased to only around 10 hours per week in the last year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework fell, and it identifies refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. Most figures are accurately selected, including the washing-machine dip to about 65% in 1980 and the refrigerator’s rise to 90% in 1960. However, saying “none” of households had a refrigerator in 1920 is inaccurate; the chart shows approximately 2%. The claim that appliance use caused the reduction in housework is plausible but not directly demonstrated by the charts, so describe the trends as occurring alongside one another. The final housework figure is about 11 hours, rather than “around 10.” Overall, the key information is covered and supported, with a few overstatements or imprecisions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. This gives the reader a clear progression, and sequencing phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Lastly,” and “Subsequently” help distinguish the series and changes over time. The appliance paragraph is somewhat long and could be easier to follow if the trends were grouped more deliberately—for example, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners together, then washing machines. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “Finally” and “then” constructions. The overview’s causal link, “Consequently,” is stronger than the charts establish. More varied transitions and clearer grouping would make the cohesion more flexible and less dependent on chronological listing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “steadily increased,” “skyrocketed,” “decreased,” and “reaching,” which helps describe trends. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “machines usage” is not the right expression for household ownership, and “present in every household” is less precise than saying ownership reached 100%. “The popularity of it” is also vague for a chart about the proportion of households owning refrigerators. Spelling errors such as “housholds,” “vaccum,” and “diping” are noticeable, although the intended meaning remains clear. To strengthen this criterion, use accurate collocations for data description and check spelling, while avoiding repeated general verbs such as “reaching.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “the number of hours needed for housework” and contrastive structures such as “On the other hand.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “all three of the machines usage have gone up” has problems with the noun phrase and subject–verb agreement, while “washing machine were” and “70% of the household … had” show agreement or number errors. The opening also needs an article in “the proportion of households,” and “in 1920” should begin with a capital letter in the new paragraph. Review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, and proofread sentence openings and punctuation to improve accuracy.
