IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two line charts illustrate the changes in proportion of households owing electrical appliances and the total weekly time spent doing housework in a country over the period of one century.
Overall, the households having electrical appliances (washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum claeaners) increased while the number of hours spent weekly on housework decreased from 1920 to 2019. Refrigerator and vacuum cleaner become universal appliances while the washing machine also experienced a moderate growth.
In 1920, near to 0% households had a refrigerator but its ownership increased from above 50% in 1940 to 90% in 1980. In 2000, all the housholds (100%) had a refrigerator that remained stable until through 2019. In 1920, 30% of household owned a vacuum cleaner while 40% owned a washing machine. Vacuum cleaner reported a consistent growth over the period of time and reached 100% in 2000 and remained there until the end of time. Housholds equipped with a waching machine fell slightly to below 70% in 1980 before recovering and reaching just below 80% in 2019.
For weekly hours spent on housework, almost 50 hours per week were spent doing house chores in 1920.These figures decresed stabily and reached below 20 hours per week in 1980. It further fell to weekly 10 hours spent on doing house work in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both charts and gives a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell, with refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching universal ownership. Most key figures and trends are accurately selected, including the washing-machine dip around 1980 and subsequent recovery. There is one notable data error: refrigerator ownership reached 90% in 1960, not 1980; by 1980 it had reached 100%. The housework description also says the figure was below 20 hours in 1980, whereas it was about 15, and could more clearly mention that it remained at roughly 15 hours in 2000 before falling further. Overall, the main features are reported and supported, though a few details are imprecise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. The progression from the overall trends to specific comparisons is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while,” and “before recovering” help connect the information. The appliance paragraph groups the three series sensibly, although it moves between them somewhat abruptly; clearer transitions or grouping the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner together would make comparisons more explicit. The final paragraph is brief and omits the 2000 plateau, so the development of the housework trend feels less complete. Overall, the organisation is clear, with some room to make cohesion and comparisons more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership,” “moderate growth,” “remained stable,” and “recovering.” These choices help describe trends and comparisons, though some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “households having electrical appliances,” “reported a consistent growth,” and “reached below 20 hours.” Spelling errors in “claeaners,” “housholds,” “waching,” “decresed,” and “stabily” also show inconsistent control. “House chores” is less suitable for a formal chart summary than “housework.” Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; this would make the vocabulary more precise while retaining the useful range already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast and time clauses: “while the washing machine also experienced a moderate growth” and “before recovering and reaching just below 80% in 2019.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the households having electrical appliances … increased” has an unclear subject construction, and “In 1920, near to 0% households had a refrigerator” is missing an article or suitable quantifier. The phrase “remained stable until through 2019” combines incompatible prepositions, while “These figures decreased” does not agree with the singular housework total being described. Review sentence subjects, articles, agreement and punctuation, especially the missing space after “1920.”
