cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line chart illustrates the ownership of electrical appliances and the number of hours spent on housework in households per week in one country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, the number of hours spent on housework decreased with the increase in the usage of electrical appliances.

In 1920, the percentage of houses with refrigerator was zero whereas, thirty percent of houses had vacuum cleanser and forty percent had washing machine in that year and the number of hours of housework were fifty. In 1940, all the appliances had nearly close percentages of usage which were fifty percent of vacuum cleaner, sixty of washing machine and the percentage of refrigerator increased sharply to around fifty-five percent. The amount time spent on household work decreased gradually which was approximately thirty-five hours.

In 1960, washing machine and vacuum cleaner had the same percentage which was seventy and refrigerator crossed them with ninety percentage of ownership. The number of hours were on housework were 20 in that year. In 1980, these hours decreased to fifteen with around sixty-three percent ownership of washing machine, ninety percent of vacuum cleaner and hundred percent of refrigerator. These percentages went up to hundred for vacuum cleaner and seventy for washing machine in 2000 withfifteen hours of housework.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the overall relationship between rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours, and you report several key figures accurately, including the 1940 and 1960 comparisons and the decline to 15 hours by 1980. However, the overview is brief and could better summarise the distinct trends: refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached full ownership, while washing-machine ownership fluctuated and remained lower. There are also factual inaccuracies or omissions: refrigerator ownership was about 2%, not zero, in 1920; the 2019 figures are not reported; and the final sentence does not clearly state the 2019 housework figure of 11 hours. A fuller overview and coverage of the endpoint would make the summary more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by chronological details, so the reader can follow the changes from 1920 onward. Time markers such as “In 1940” and “In 1960” help organise the comparisons. However, the account ends with 2000 and does not complete the sequence through 2019, which weakens the progression. Some links between ideas are also awkward or unclear, particularly “Overall … with the increase” and the long sentence describing the 1980 and 2000 figures. Grouping the appliance trends separately from the housework trend, and using clearer comparison phrases, would make cohesion less mechanical and the information easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “decreased,” “increased sharply,” and “crossed,” and the main meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices: “vacuum cleanser” is not the correct appliance name, “usage” is less suitable than “ownership” for the chart, and “nearly close percentages” is awkward. “The amount time” and “withfifteen” also show problems with word form or spacing. Aim for precise collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “the number of hours spent on housework.” More consistent, accurate phrasing would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence and comparisons across years. Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “houses with refrigerator” needs an article or plural form, and “the amount time spent” is missing “of.” The clause “the number of hours were on housework were 20” has faulty structure and agreement; a clearer form is “the number of hours spent on housework was 20.” Punctuation in “whereas, thirty percent” is also incorrect. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but checking articles, agreement, and sentence construction would make the writing more accurate.
