Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and number of hours doing housechores in households in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner showed an upward trend all over the years while number of hours of housework per week per household showed a downward trend.

In 1920, there was no use of refrigeretor whereas 30% of households had vacuum cleaner and 40% of had washing machine. However these electrical appliances experienced a siginificant rose till 1940 and hold percentage between 50%-60%. In 1960 vacuum cleaner and washing machin recorded same figure of 70% while refigerator accounted for 90%. However till 1960 number of hours per week decreased by 30% from 50%. Refrigerator held the highest position till 2000, meanwhile vacuum cleaner percentage gained a huge spike and took the same spot compared to refrigerator.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall contrast: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. You also report several relevant figures, including 30% for vacuum cleaners and 40% for washing machines in 1920, and full refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership by 2000. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were at about 2% in 1920, rather than having “no use,” and the housework figure fell from 50 to 20 hours by 1960, not by 30%. The overview also omits the washing machine’s slight dip around 1980 and its later recovery. The final comparison repeats the decline in housework and gives an approximate endpoint. More precise reporting and a clearer overview of all three appliance trends would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the reader can follow the broad movement from 1920 to 2019. Linking words such as “Overall,” “However” and “From 2000 to 2019” help signal stages. At times, though, connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “However these electrical appliances experienced…” does not clearly identify which appliances or figures are being compared, and “However till 1960” makes the relationship between appliance ownership and housework difficult to follow. The final two sentences repeat the decline in housework rather than adding a distinct comparison. Grouping the appliance trends together and then comparing them with housework, while using clearer references, would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “upward trend,” “downward trend,” “accounted for” and “percentage,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “gained a huge spike,” but this collocation is not natural for a gradual rise. Several spelling and word-choice errors—“refrigeretor,” “siginificant,” “refigerator,” “numebr” and “Comparetively”—reduce accuracy. Phrases such as “no use of refrigerator” and “same spot” are also imprecise for describing chart data. Aim for accurate, conventional expressions such as “ownership stood at,” “rose steadily” and “reached the same level,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including the contrast in “while number of hours… showed a downward trend” and the time phrase “From 2000 to 2019.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. Articles and noun forms are missing or inconsistent in phrases such as “a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner” and “40% of had washing machine”; the latter also lacks a clear grammatical structure. The sentence beginning “In 1960…” shifts awkwardly into “However till 1960,” and “household work had been decreased” uses an unsuitable passive form. Work on articles, complete comparisons, and consistent past-tense reporting. More accurate complex sentences would help you express trends without making relationships ambiguous.
