Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, all three appliances has been increased over the period of time while the time spent during the week has been decreased considerably. A refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner are the most popular in all households, while a washing machine is less common.

In 1920, washing machine were the most popular appliance and used by 40% of the houses, compared with vaccum cleaner owned by 30% of the households. By 1950, almost all the appliances has increased and reached upto 55%,60% and 65% respectively. In 1960, households using vaccum cleaner and washing machine increased upto70%, while refrigerator has reached to the highest which is 90%. Refrigerator reached to 100% and has remained constant throughout the year. Similarly, vaccum cleaner percentage rose upto 100% by 2000 and was same throughout the year. In contrast, washing machine has started to fall since 1960 and reached 65% during the period which is now increases upto 75% by 2019.

Regarding housework, it has declined from the highest which is about 50% and reached to the lowest of 10%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and identify the main contrast: appliance ownership generally rose while time spent on housework fell. You also report several useful figures, including the 1920 appliance levels and refrigerators reaching 100%. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the chart gives 1940, not 1950, and the washing-machine figure falls to 65% in 1980 before rising, rather than simply falling “since 1960.” The overview also says refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were most popular “in all households,” which is not true for 1920. The housework summary is incomplete and uses a percentage instead of hours; it falls from 50 hours to about 11. More precise coverage of these features would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. This makes the main topics easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In contrast” and “Regarding housework” help signal shifts. However, the appliance paragraph moves between years without consistently presenting the data in chronological order, and the reference “reached to the highest” is not sufficiently clear about which appliance is meant. The final housework paragraph is very brief compared with the appliance discussion, so the two charts are not balanced. Organise the details by year or by appliance, and give the housework trend a fuller, clearly connected comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “popular,” “declined,” “remained constant” and “in contrast.” These choices generally communicate the trends, and the response attempts to vary its wording rather than repeat only “increased.” Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “used by 40% of the houses” is less suitable than describing the proportion of households that owned a machine, while “the highest” and “the lowest” are vague without naming the measure. There are also spelling errors in “vaccum” and awkward forms such as “upto.” Use precise terms for ownership and figures, and check spelling and standard written forms to improve accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and “compared with,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, particularly in subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “all three appliances has been increased” should use a plural verb and a more suitable active construction, while “washing machine were” needs singular or plural agreement. Tense and aspect are also inconsistent in “has started to fall … which is now increases.” Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner are the most popular in all households.” Practise describing past chart data consistently in the past tense and check agreement in each clause.
