cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 4.5)

These 2 charts clearly illustrates the change observed in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing house activities in households in a country between the year 1920 and 2019.

In short, the first chart clearly highlighted 3

appliances ;Washing machine,Refrigerator and Vacuum Cleaner and their contribution in the form of percentage between the time period ([redacted phone]) to show a clear picture to the observer.

Meanwhile , the second chart compares the number of hour per week with number of hours of housework in the time period from 1920 to 2019

Overall the refrigerator contributed only from 1920 to 1980 .It is being introduced in 1920 and it was rapidly rose to somewhere more than 50 by 1940 and it was again rapidly increased to 90 by 1980

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the two charts and names all three appliances, and it attempts to describe the refrigerator’s rise. However, it does not provide a meaningful overview of the main trends: for example, it misses that appliance ownership generally increased while weekly housework fell from 50 to 11 hours. The claim that the refrigerator contributed only from 1920 to 1980 is inaccurate; ownership reached 100% by 1980 and remained there through 2019. Its rise to about 90% occurred by 1960, not 1980. The response also contains only 119 words, below the required 150, limiting the detail reported. To improve, summarise both charts accurately and compare key changes across the full period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening introduces the charts, followed by a short summary and a detail about refrigerators. The sequence is understandable, and “Overall” and “Meanwhile” signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression is incomplete: the second chart is mentioned but not actually described, and the final sentence ends the report without a concluding comparison. Some linking is also awkward or repetitive, such as “clearly” appearing twice in the opening section. Use a clear overview paragraph, then separate paragraphs for the appliance trends and housework figures, linking comparisons directly to the relevant years.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “appliances,” and “compares,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive wording, such as “rapidly rose.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “their contribution” does not describe household ownership, and “house activities” is less suitable than “housework.” “The refrigerator contributed only” also gives the wrong sense of the data. Repetition of “clearly” and “rapidly” limits variety. Choose precise trend language and collocations, such as “the proportion of households owning refrigerators increased” and “housework hours declined.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main topic can usually be understood. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation are frequent enough to make the writing less controlled. For example, “These 2 charts clearly illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “it was rapidly rose” combines incompatible verb forms. The phrase “the number of hour per week with number of hours” is also structurally unclear. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, as in “appliances ;Washing machine,Refrigerator.” Practise accurate sentence patterns such as “The charts illustrate…” and “It rose rapidly to…” before attempting longer constructions.
