Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The first chart given illustrates the change in percentage of housholds owned electrical appliances and second chart depicts weekly working hours spent per household over the given period from 1920 to 2019 in one country.
Overall, Refrigerator and vaccum cleaner was owned by almost every household, which were least owned at start. Whereas, weekly number of housework hour per household reduced over the period.
Refrigerator was the not present in any home at the start of period in 1920. But its ownership increased significantly over the period, nearly 55% homes owned in 1940, making it second highest, and reaching to its peak in 1980 when 100% home owned it. Whereas, 30% and 40% household owned vacuum cleaner and washing machine respectively. Both increased over time, before reaching to 70%. In the next decade washing machine ownership reduced slightly, reaching to 65%, before rising to its peak of 75%. Whereas, 100% households owned vacuum cleaner until 2000 and remain same until 2019.
Number of hours per week for housework were highest in 1920 with 50 hours, which declined over the period before remaining constant at 15 hours, in two decades from 1980 to 2000. Subsequently, declining to its lowest of above 10 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. You also select useful comparisons, including the refrigerator’s rapid rise to full ownership and the decline in housework from 50 to 15 hours before falling further. Most reported figures match the chart. However, the overview says refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were “owned by almost every household” without distinguishing their different starting points and trajectories, and the washing-machine trend is described imprecisely: it rose from 40% to 70% by 1960, dipped to 65% in 1980, then increased. The final figure for housework is described only as “above 10 hours,” rather than approximately 11. More precise overview statements and clearer reporting of these details would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from appliance ownership to housework hours. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the charts. You also use linking expressions such as “Whereas,” “before” and “Subsequently” to signal comparisons and changes. However, “Whereas” is repeatedly used in ways that do not always create a clear contrast, and some references are difficult to follow—for example, “Both increased over time, before reaching to 70%” does not clearly identify which appliances or when. The appliance paragraph also moves between series and years without a consistently clear sequence. Use more precise referencing and organise the appliance trends in a more systematic order.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased significantly,” “declined,” “reduced” and “reaching to its peak.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “weekly working hours” for housework time, “was the not present,” and “reaching to its peak.” There are also spelling errors in “housholds” and “vaccum,” and “housework hour” is not formed naturally. Aim for more precise chart language and check spelling and collocations. For example, use “the proportion of households owning” an appliance and “fell to a low of approximately 11 hours” for the final housework figure.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “before” and “when,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. However, some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “Refrigerator and vaccum cleaner was owned” needs plural agreement, while “the not present” has an incorrect article structure. In “30% and 40% household owned,” the plural noun and verb form are also needed. Some sentences are awkwardly joined or incomplete in structure, particularly “Whereas, 30% and 40% household owned vacuum cleaner and washing machine respectively.” Improve control of articles, plurals and subject–verb agreement, and make sure contrast clauses are attached to a complete main clause. These corrections would make your varied sentence attempts more accurate.
