Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph compares the changes in ownership of electrical appliance and amount of hours spent doing housework in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the refrigerator and the vacuum cleaner has highest percentage while washing machine had the lowest. It is also clear that most figures rise in and out.

In the year 1920, refrigerator used by household was about 0% whereas in 1940 the use of refrigerator percentage sharply increase upto 50%. Moreover, 2000 and 2019 the percentage of refrigerator used by people was almost same 100%.

On the other hand, the washing machine show some up and down in percentage. In 1960 the ratio for using machine is about 70% followed by 1980 it decline by 10% and again in the end of 2019 the use of washing machine rose about 70%. Furthermore, people used vacuum cleaner more in 1940 and this percentage increase by the time period from 1960 to 2019.

Whereas in 1920, 50% of hours spent on housework. In 1940, this number incline about 30% and 20% in 1960. In addition to 1980 and 2019 the number of hours spent on household work is showing decline percetage( 10%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two broad patterns: appliance ownership generally increased, while time spent on housework fell. You also include figures for several years, such as refrigerator ownership reaching 100% and housework dropping to around 20 hours by 1960. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner did not both have the highest ownership throughout, and “most figures rise in and out” does not clearly summarise the trends. Some details are misreported: housework was about 35 hours in 1940, not 30; washing-machine ownership fell from 70% to 65% in 1980, not by 10%; and it reached about 75% in 2019. Give a clearer overview and compare the series more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” help connect points, but some transitions are mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. For example, “Whereas in 1920” begins the final paragraph without a complete contrast, and the appliance paragraph moves between refrigerator, washing machine and vacuum cleaner without a consistent comparison pattern. Grouping the appliance trends together in a clearer sequence, then describing the decline in housework, would improve progression. Use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough task-related vocabulary to communicate the main subject, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “decline” and “increase.” There are also attempts at varied phrasing, such as “up and down” and “by the time period.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing data: “the use of refrigerator percentage,” “the ratio for using machine” and “showing decline percentage” make some statements harder to understand. “Rise in and out” is also not an appropriate description of fluctuating figures. Spelling errors such as “percetage” and awkward collocations limit precision. Prefer standard chart language—“the proportion of households with…,” “rose to,” “fell to” and “remained stable”—and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “while,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur often enough to make some details difficult to follow. For example, “the refrigerator and the vacuum cleaner has” needs plural agreement, while “the washing machine show” and “this percentage increase” need past-tense verbs. The sentence beginning “In 1940, this number incline about 30% and 20% in 1960” is not grammatically clear, and “followed by 1980 it decline” has a faulty clause structure. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons with complete clauses, such as “It fell to 65% in 1980 before rising again.”
