cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two line charts compares the percentage of households owning selected electronic devices to the number of hours spent on its between the year 1920 to 2019.

Overall, a large number of households have been relaying on refrigerator and vaccum cleaner in 2000 and remains unchanged in the next years. Although these appliances are excessively used, the time spent in working is very less in the similar time period.

In 1920, 50 hours per week are barely any household have the refrigerator which in result caused people to use more traditional methods to store food. In contrast, 30% household owned vaccum cleaner and 40% had washing machine

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two charts and attempt an overview, noting that refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership is high by 2000 and stays level afterwards. However, the overview is incomplete: it misses the near-universal ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by the end, the washing-machine dip and recovery, and the substantial fall in weekly housework. The body gives only a few 1920 figures and does not report the later changes that are central to the task. The statement that appliances were “excessively used” is not supported by the chart, which shows ownership rather than use. The response is also 43 words below the required minimum, limiting its coverage. Include a clear overview and compare the main trends across the full period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph beginning with 1920 data. The opening comparison between appliance ownership and housework also gives the response a relevant direction. However, the progression stops after the initial-year figures, so the reader is not guided through the changes over time. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear; for example, “which in result caused people to use more traditional methods” does not clearly connect the refrigerator figure to the chart’s information. The final sentence is unfinished, which disrupts the paragraph and leaves the comparison incomplete. Organise the body by trends or time periods, use clear links between comparisons, and ensure each paragraph and sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage of households,” “refrigerator,” “vacuum cleaner,” and “washing machine,” and you attempt to describe trends with “remains unchanged.” However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear. “Relaying on” does not express ownership, while “appliances are excessively used” confuses ownership with frequency of use. “The time spent in working” is also an imprecise description of housework. Spelling errors such as “vaccum” and “refrigerator” (in the phrase about barely any households) reduce accuracy. Build a small set of precise trend expressions—such as “the proportion rose,” “levelled off,” and “hours declined”—and check spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few longer structures, including “Although these appliances are excessively used…” and “which in result caused…,” but control is inconsistent, and most sentences rely on simple patterns. There are errors in agreement and verb forms: “The two line charts compares” should use a plural verb, and “50 hours per week are barely any household have the refrigerator” does not form a grammatical sentence. The phrase “between the year 1920 to 2019” also uses an incorrect preposition pattern; use “between 1920 and 2019.” Missing punctuation at the end of the final sentence further affects clarity. Practise accurate comparisons and past-tense reporting, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb before adding complex clauses.
