IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given graphs represent the information about the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent on housework of a country between 1920 and 2019.
Firstly, in the first line chart, the ownership of electrical appliances can be observed. The washing machines were owned by 40% of the households in 1920, which increased up-to 70% till 1960 and with a slight decrease in 1980, it finally reached a little more that 70% in 2019. The ownership of refridgerators and vacuum cleaners showed a sharp increase from 0% and 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2019.
In the second picture, in 1920, the average number oh hours spent on household works started as 50 hours per week and decreased significantly to 20 hours in 1960. Finally, the amount of time reduced to 10 hours of weekly work till 2019.
Overall, as observed in both the graphs, it is noticeable that as the ownership of electrical appliances increased, the amount of working hours reduced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and give a relevant overall trend: appliance ownership generally rose while weekly housework fell. Several key figures are accurately reported, including washing-machine ownership at 40% in 1920 and around 70% by 1960, and housework declining from 50 to 20 hours by 1960. This meets the task well, with some features already clearly selected and compared. However, the refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner trends are compressed into one sentence, and the final values are not distinguished: refrigerators reached about 100% by 1980, while vacuum cleaners did so by 2000. The housework figures for 1980 and 2000, when the level remained around 15 hours, are also omitted. More precise coverage of these stages would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on appliance ownership, a paragraph on housework, and a concluding overview. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Finally,” and “Overall” help the reader follow the account, and the main relationship between the two charts is easy to identify. The progression is logical, though the appliance paragraph groups refrigerators and vacuum cleaners together without explaining their different paths, which makes the comparison less clear. “In the second picture” is also a vague reference to the visual. To strengthen the organisation, use more precise chart references and group details by meaningful trends—for example, the rapid rise in refrigerator ownership versus the steadier increase in vacuum-cleaner ownership.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased,” “sharp increase,” “slight decrease,” and “reduced significantly.” These choices communicate the main movements, and the overall meaning remains clear. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for a data report: “ownership … showed a sharp increase from 0%” overlooks the chart’s approximate starting value of 2%, while “amount of working hours” is not a natural description of housework time. There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “refridgerators” and “more that 70%.” Aim for accurate collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “weekly hours spent on housework,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which increased up-to 70% till 1960” and a concluding clause beginning “as observed in both the graphs.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following the trends. Some errors remain in sentence construction and grammatical form. For example, “the average number oh hours … started as 50 hours” contains a faulty construction, and “the amount of time reduced to 10 hours of weekly work till 2019” is awkwardly structured. The sentence beginning “The washing machines were owned…” also has an unclear subject-to-trend relationship. Practise concise reporting structures such as “The figure rose to…” and “Housework time fell from… to…” to improve control.
