Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line charts illustrates the percentage of households owning washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and the amount of time spent on housework per hour in the homes in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the proportion of vacuum cleaners and refrigerators in the households increased over time and the most dramatic growth was witnessed in the later; while, washing machine rose slightly. The time spent on domestic work declined over over the time.
The percentage of households owning refrigerators was zero in 1920, and it rose dramatically to 90% in 1960, then increased slightly to 100% in 1980, and remained unchanged in the subsequent years. Similarly, the proportion for the vacuum cleaners was 30% in 1920, rising considerably to 100% in 2000 and remained constant.
On the other hand, the percentage for washing machines rose slighlty from 40% in 1920 to 70 percentage in 1960, and fluctuated slightly in the subsequent year before tapering off at aroud 74% in 2019. In case of housework, 50 hours were spent per week in 1920 which fell noticeably to 20, then slightly to just over 10 in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework declined. You also select useful comparisons, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching that level by 2000. This gives the report a clear overview and relevant supporting detail. However, some figures and trends are inaccurate or imprecise: refrigerators were about 2%, not zero, in 1920, and washing-machine ownership did not simply rise slightly, as it fell from 70% to 65% in 1980 before recovering. The overview’s claim that the most dramatic growth occurred later is also unclear, since refrigerator ownership rose especially sharply earlier. More precise reporting of these changes would make the account more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “On the other hand” help signal the relationships between points, and the reader can follow the broad progression. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The overview’s “the later” has no clear reference, and “the subsequent year” is vague when describing changes across several decades. The final paragraph also moves from washing machines to housework without a clear transition. Use more precise time references and make the relationship between the two chart topics explicit to strengthen the progression and reduce occasional awkwardness.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “rose dramatically,” “rising considerably,” “remained unchanged,” “declined,” and “fell noticeably.” These choices are generally appropriate for describing charts, and the meaning remains clear. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the most dramatic growth was witnessed in the later,” “the proportion for the vacuum cleaners,” and “tapering off at around 74%.” There are also spelling errors in “slighlty” and “aroud,” while “over over” is an unnecessary repetition. Aim for accurate collocations and concise phrasing—for example, refer to “ownership of refrigerators” and say that it “levelled off.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a sentence with “while” and clauses linked by “which fell noticeably.” Most of the information is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening has subject–verb disagreement: “The line charts illustrates” should be “The line charts illustrate.” In “washing machine rose slightly,” the plural or possessive construction is needed, and “70 percentage” should be “70 percent.” The phrase “50 hours were spent per week in 1920 which fell” also attaches “which” unclearly; a clearer structure would be “Housework took 50 hours per week in 1920, falling to 20 hours by 1960.” Check agreement, articles, and clause attachment, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
