Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)

cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two charts give information about the percentage of households with three types of electrical appliances and the number of hours spent on housework per week between 1920 to 2019

Overall, the percentage of all three applicances increased significantly over the 100 year period. In contrast, the amount of time spent doing weekly housework experienced a dramatic decrease.

Looking at the first chart, in 1920, the washing machine was owned by about 42% of households, while vaccum cleaner was at 30%, and the refrigerator was owned by almost no houses. Over the following decades, ownership of all these appliances went up. By 2019, vaccum cleaner and refrigerator was owned 100% of households, and washing machines rose about 75%.

Turning to the second chart, households spent a high average of 50 hours per week doing houseworks in 1920. The number dropped sharply to arounf 20 hours within 1960, and it gradually decreased to 10 hours by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall contrast accurately: appliance ownership rose, while weekly housework time fell. The response also selects relevant figures, including the washing machine at about 42% in 1920, refrigerators at almost zero, and housework declining from 50 hours to around 20 by 1960. This gives the reader a sound account of the broad trends. However, some important stages are underdeveloped: the refrigerator reached 100% by 1980 and the vacuum cleaner by 2000, while washing-machine ownership dipped slightly around 1980 before rising again. The housework figure also levelled off at about 15 hours from 1980 to 2000 before falling to 11. Including these comparisons would make the summary more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised clearly into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two charts. The progression from the appliance data to housework is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning to the second chart” help signal the structure. Within the appliance paragraph, the sequence from 1920 to 2019 is also logical. To strengthen cohesion further, connect the selected figures more explicitly rather than relying mainly on a general statement that ownership “went up.” For example, you could contrast the refrigerator’s rapid rise and early saturation with the washing machine’s small dip. A clearer link between the housework plateau from 1980 to 2000 and its later decline would also improve the flow of information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “owned,” “dramatic decrease,” and “dropped sharply,” so the main trends are understandable. However, the range is somewhat repetitive and several word choices or forms are inaccurate. “Applicances” and “vaccum” are misspelled, while “houseworks” is not the appropriate form; use “housework.” “Owned” is repeated where “households had” or “ownership reached” would sound more natural, and “almost no houses” is less precise than “almost no households.” Aim to vary trend language and use accurate collocations for chart descriptions. These improvements would make the account more precise and fluent without changing its clear overall meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the relationships between figures remain clear. The overview sentence beginning “In contrast” is an effective way to express the opposing trends. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in agreement and sentence construction. In “vacuum cleaner and refrigerator was owned,” the plural subject requires “were,” and the passive construction needs “by”: “were owned by 100% of households.” The opening phrase “between 1920 to 2019” should be “between 1920 and 2019” or “from 1920 to 2019.” In “washing machines rose about 75%,” clarify that ownership rose to about 75%. More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy.
