IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The two line graphs represent the percentage of household and numbers of hours of housework per week using electrical appliance in one country from 1920 to 2019.
The electrical appliances that graph represents are washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner which are used on everyday. Washing machine is used to wash the clothes by the help of water and washing powder. In the start of 1920, the percentage of household using washing machine was 40% which increased to 60 percent in 1960 but declined in 1980 to 50 percent. The refrigeator was invented to freeze the edible items. In early 1920s, the refrigerator had a zero percentage of household which significantly arised to 50 percent in 1940 and has the 100 percent in 2019 to making it the most useful appliance. The vacuum cleaner is helpful in cleaning the dirt of houses. Initially the percentage of household using vaccum

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and begins to report appliance figures, but it does not provide a complete summary of the charts. It ends mid-sentence at “Initially the percentage of household using vaccum,” so the vacuum-cleaner trend and the housework-hours graph are not reported, and there is no overview of the main patterns. Some figures are also inaccurate: washing-machine ownership rose from 40% to 70% by 1960, not 60%, and was about 65% in 1980, not 50%; refrigerator ownership was about 2% in 1920 rather than zero. The response is also one word below the required minimum. To improve, complete the account, include both graphs, and summarise the overall rise in appliance ownership alongside the fall in housework time.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is some basic organisation: the opening introduces the charts, and the following paragraph discusses appliances in sequence. However, the response does not progress through a complete report. It moves from washing machines to refrigerators and starts on vacuum cleaners, then stops, while the second graph is omitted entirely. The repeated pattern of describing each appliance separately also leaves no clear overview or comparison between the two charts. Linking expressions such as “In the start” and “In early 1920s” provide limited sequencing, but the relationships between trends are not developed. Use a clear structure with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the main appliance trends and housework hours; ensure each paragraph is complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response has enough topic-related vocabulary to identify the appliances and describe basic change, using terms such as “percentage,” “increased,” “declined,” and “significantly.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unsuitable for a formal chart report. Explanations such as “used to wash the clothes by the help of water and washing powder” and “invented to freeze the edible items” are irrelevant to the data and use awkward phrasing. There are also spelling errors, including “vaccum” and “refrigeator,” and “arised” is not the correct form. Focus on precise trend language and accurate collocations, for example “ownership rose,” “reached,” and “remained stable,” rather than explaining what appliances do.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses some simple and compound sentence forms, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “The two line graphs represent the percentage of household and numbers of hours” has mismatched singular and plural forms, while “the refrigerator had a zero percentage of household” is not a well-formed description of the data. The phrase “has the 100 percent in 2019 to making it” also combines verb forms incorrectly. Tense use shifts between past and present when describing historical figures. Practise forming accurate past-tense comparisons and complete clauses, and check articles, plurals, and agreement before submitting.
