Student answer (Band 5.5)
The charts illustrate the modifications in the ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households. It provides information of one country between the year 1920 and 2019.
Overall, the first graph shows information on the percentage of household with electrical application that shows rise in it's percentage. And the second graph illustrates the number of hours per week for per household that shows gradual decrease in the number of hours per week between the year 1920 and 2019.
Firstly, the percentage households of refrigerator gradually increases from the year 1920 to 1980, then it remains constant. Similarly, the percentage of households of vacuum cleaner gradually increases upto the year 2000, then stays constant. Whereas, for washing machine there is a slight fluctuations, nevertheless it attain highest percentage in the year 2019.
In constract, there is a steady fall in the usage for number of hours per week. From the year 1920 to 1980, there is a steady decrease, then there is a plunge decline upto the year 2019

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework hours fell. You also note that refrigerator ownership levelled off after 1980 and vacuum-cleaner ownership after 2000. However, the account is only partly developed because it gives almost no figures and misses important comparisons, such as refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners doing so by 2000. The description of washing machines as showing “slight fluctuations” is vague; the series rises overall, with a small dip around 1980, and reaches about 75% in 2019. The final claim of a “plunge decline” is inaccurate: housework hours fall steadily overall, with a plateau around 1980–2000. Add selected figures and describe these trends more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. This helps the reader identify the two chart topics, and linking expressions such as “Similarly” and “In contrast” show an attempt to connect information. However, progression within the body is limited because the appliance paragraph lists trends without supporting figures or a clear comparison, while the final paragraph repeats the general decline and then describes its stages imprecisely. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “then” constructions. Improve the flow by grouping the appliance trends around their different endpoints, and use clear time comparisons to connect each stage of the housework trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “gradually increases,” “remains constant,” and “steady fall,” so the main trends are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. “Electrical application” does not name the items shown; use “electrical appliances.” “Usage for number of hours” is awkward, and “plunge decline” is not a natural description of the gradual fall in housework hours. There are also spelling errors in “constract” and “upto,” and “fluctuations” is not quite precise for the washing-machine pattern. Aim for accurate trend language such as “rose,” “levelled off,” and “declined steadily,” and vary it without using unnatural combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses joined with “whereas” and “nevertheless.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure and agreement are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “It provides information of one country” has an unclear subject and an incorrect preposition, while “the first graph shows information … that shows rise” repeats the verb and has faulty agreement and article use. In “it attain highest percentage,” the verb form and article are missing; “for per household” also has an incorrect construction. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences, checking singular/plural agreement and articles, and punctuating contrast clauses correctly.
