Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The first line chart displays the changes in percentage of households with electrical appliances from 1920 to 2019 and the second chart shows changes in hours of housework per week in the same period of time.
Overall, the percentage of electrical appliances like refrigerators and vaccum cleaners in household increased from 1920 to 2019. However, there was a slight fluctuation in the percentage houses with washing machines throughout the decades. As a result, the amount of hours spending on housework reduced significantly.
The possession of refrigerator in each house stand at 0 percent in 1920 which is the lowest of them in that year. However in 1980, the ownership went up to 100 percent making it the highest in that year. The possession of vaccum cleaner followed the same trend as the possession of refrigerator but the increasing rate in percentage is a bit more subtle compare to refrigerator. On the other hand, the possession of washing machine stand at 40 percent in 1920 which is the highest in that year. The possession of washing machine went up till 1960 and fell in 1980 but recovered in the following. And in 2019, the possession of washing machine stand at roughly 75 percent which is the lowest in the year. Whereas, the hours of housework in each household fell from 50 hours to around 10 hours in the same period. The hours of housework are cut by almost 80

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall patterns: refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership rose, washing-machine ownership fluctuated slightly, and weekly housework declined substantially. You also include useful comparisons, such as washing machines being most common in 1920 and refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980. This covers the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, a few details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were at about 2%, not 0%, in 1920, and washing machines were not the lowest category in 2019, since all three appliances were at or near 100% except washing machines at about 75%. The vacuum-cleaner trend and the final housework figure also need clearer reporting. More precise comparisons would complete the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the figures. The contrast signalled by “However” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the main comparisons, and the information generally progresses from appliance ownership to housework. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, though, with repeated openings such as “The possession of…” and several ideas joined by “And” or “Whereas” within a long paragraph. The final sentence, “The hours of housework are cut by almost 80,” is incomplete, so the ending feels abrupt and the comparison is left unexplained. Grouping the appliance trends more deliberately and giving the housework data a complete concluding sentence would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “ownership,” “fluctuation,” “reduced significantly,” and “followed the same trend.” These choices communicate the main patterns, and some variation in phrasing is attempted. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “possession of refrigerator in each house,” “the increasing rate…is a bit more subtle,” and “hours of housework are cut.” “Vaccum” is also misspelled, and “stand” is repeatedly used where a more suitable reporting verb is needed. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “fell to,” and use “housework hours” or “time spent on housework” consistently. This would improve precision without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning “However” and “Whereas,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “the percentage…in household increased,” “the possession…stand,” and “the hours…fell” show inconsistent control. Articles and plural forms are also sometimes missing or inaccurate, as in “possession of refrigerator in each house” and “percentage houses.” The final sentence, “The hours of housework are cut by almost 80,” is structurally incomplete and lacks a clear unit or comparison. Check agreement and tense when describing past data, and proofread each sentence for complete clauses. More consistent accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the response.
