IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
the two graphs illustrate informations related to housework activities. In fact, the first line graph shows a comparison between different households with electrical appliances between 1920 and 2019.While the second graph illustrates the number of hours of housework per househild over the same period.
Overall, it is clear from the first graph that the use of refrigerator rose dramatically from 1920 to 1980 before remaining stable as the dominant percentage of households while the washing machine proportion is the weakest one. Regarding to the second line graph, the number of hours of housework declined considerably during this ninty nine-year period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify both charts and give a relevant overview: appliance ownership generally increased, while weekly housework hours fell. However, the response addresses the task only partially because it stops before reporting the main data in detail; the unfinished phrase “According to the first” leaves the body absent. The overview also contains an inaccurate comparison: you call washing machines “the weakest one,” although refrigerators were far less common in 1920 and washing machines were not consistently the least-owned appliance. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the lack of key comparisons and supporting figures. To improve, complete the report with selected values and describe the main changes, including the refrigerator’s rise to full ownership and the decline in housework hours.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview, and “Overall” and “Regarding to the second line graph” signal a shift between the charts. However, the response has no developed body paragraph and ends abruptly with “According to the first,” so the information does not progress to a complete report. The opening sentence also uses “In fact” without a clear contrast or explanation, and the transition “While” creates an incomplete relationship between the two chart descriptions. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the overview and supporting details, and connect comparisons with clear references such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “electrical appliances,” “rose dramatically,” “remaining stable,” and “declined considerably,” which communicates the broad trends. The range is limited, however, and several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “informations” is not the correct form, “the weakest one” is unclear for describing ownership proportions, and “Regarding to” is an incorrect collocation. “Househild” and “ninty” also contain spelling errors. These issues are noticeable, though the general topic remains understandable. Build a more precise range for describing data, such as “share,” “proportion,” “reached,” and “levelled off,” and check spelling and word forms before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some complex sentence forms, for example, “Overall, it is clear from the first graph that…” and the clause beginning “before remaining stable.” However, control is inconsistent. The opening uses a sentence fragment beginning “While the second graph…,” and the final phrase “According to the first” is incomplete. There are also errors in articles and number agreement, as in “the use of refrigerator,” and punctuation is faulty where a full stop runs directly into “While.” These problems make the report feel unfinished and sometimes interrupt the reader’s understanding. Aim for complete sentences, check article use and singular/plural forms, and use a wider range of accurately controlled comparisons.
