Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graphs demonstrate the changing in ownership of different home appliances and total amount of time spent by doing housework in one country from 1920 to 2019 .
Overall, it is evident that percentage of using refrigerator depicted the most significant growth throughout the period, while number of work by weekly declined over the period.
In terms of home appliances, in 1929 the figure started just around 5, while it drammatically surged to just over 50% in 1940 and followed a upwards tends before reaching at peak by 2019. Moreover, the figure of washing machine and vacumm cleaner showed a similar pattern , whereas number of washing machine started from 40% in 1920 and rose slightly to 60% by 1940. In ter

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the broad contrast that appliance ownership increased while weekly housework declined, and you attempt to compare several appliances. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it ends mid-sentence (“In ter…”) and does not report the housework figures or explain the main changes across the full period. Some data are also inaccurate: the refrigerator began at about 2% in 1920, not in 1929, and its rise to 1940 was to around 55%, rather than “just over 50%” only if stated approximately; the later values and the vacuum-cleaner trend are not adequately described. The overview is too general to summarise the key features. The response is 27 words below the required minimum, which further limits its coverage. Include a complete overview and select key figures for all series.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview and a paragraph about appliances. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In terms of,” and “Moreover” help signal the intended structure. However, the progression is incomplete and difficult to follow because the final paragraph stops at “In ter…”, leaving the comparison unfinished. The overview also repeats broad trends without guiding the reader through the data, and “Moreover” introduces a comparison that is not clearly developed. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and the main details, and group related trends logically—for example, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, then washing machines and housework. Ensure each paragraph reaches a clear conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “surged,” “declined,” and “reaching a peak,” so the reader can recognise the intended subject and broad trends. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “changing in ownership,” “percentage of using refrigerator,” and “number of work by weekly.” Spelling errors, including “drammatically” and “vacumm,” also reduce precision. “Upwards tends” is not an appropriate phrase for describing a graph trend. Aim for accurate, conventional expressions such as “ownership of appliances changed,” “the proportion of households with a refrigerator,” and “weekly hours of housework.” Check spelling and use precise terms consistently for each series.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a clause beginning “whereas.” Some sentence meaning remains understandable, but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships unclear. For example, “The line graphs demonstrate the changing…” has an incorrect noun structure, while “time spent by doing housework” uses an unsuitable construction. Articles and sentence structure are also problematic in “percentage of using refrigerator depicted…” and “reaching at peak.” The final fragment, “In ter…,” leaves a sentence incomplete. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences, using accurate articles and prepositions, and checking that every sentence is complete. A reliable pattern is: “The proportion of households with refrigerators rose from…”
