Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical goods and amount of time consumed doing housework in households in one nation between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, all three appliances had a major increase throughout the period, the ownership of refrigerators had an impressive surge. The number of hours spent on housework declined over the period.
The user of refrigerators surged in the period while 0% households were using a refrigerator in 1920, in the 1940 little over 50% families had a fridge, in 1980 every household had a refrigerator and from there on percentage plateaued till the 2019. By 1920 around 40% families already access to a washing machine while there was fluctuations during the period, little over 70% families had a washing machine in 2019.
In contrast, 30% individuals were using vaccum cleaner in 1920, following the steady rise throughout the period, 100% households owned a vaccum cleaner in 2000 and 2019. With the increased availibility of electrical appliances, households work declined from 50 hours per week in 1920 to only 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while time spent on housework fell. The response also selects relevant comparisons, including refrigerators reaching full household coverage by 1980 and vacuum cleaners doing so by 2000. Most reported figures are consistent with the chart, and the final comparison captures the overall decline in housework. To make the account more fully supported, include a few more precise stages—for example, the refrigerator’s rise from about 2% in 1920 to 90% in 1960, and the washing machine’s slight dip around 1980 before recovering. The claim that refrigerator ownership was 0% in 1920 is a small inaccuracy; the chart shows approximately 2%.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, with a generally clear progression from the overall trends to individual appliances. Linking expressions such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the structure, and the final sentence connects appliance ownership with the decline in housework. Some transitions within the detail paragraphs are less smooth: the refrigerator and washing-machine information are joined in one long sequence, and “while” does not clearly express the relationship between the figures. Grouping each appliance trend more deliberately and using clearer comparisons would make the progression easier to follow. Overall, the organisation is logical, though cohesion is not consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “surge,” “plateaued,” “declined,” and “steady rise.” These choices help communicate the main movements, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “the user of refrigerators surged” should refer to ownership or the proportion of households, and “time consumed doing housework” is not a natural expression. There are also spelling errors in “vaccum” and “availibility.” Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more accurate and flexible without changing the clear overall message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, and the overview and final comparison are understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “while 0% households were using a refrigerator” is missing “of,” and “in the 1940 little over 50% families” needs articles and a clearer noun phrase. In “By 1920 around 40% families already access to a washing machine,” the sentence lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. The long sentence beginning “In contrast” also joins several ideas without secure clause structure. Practise accurate articles, prepositions, and complete verb phrases, then divide long comparisons into controlled sentences.
