Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally increased, while weekly housework hours declined. You also include relevant comparisons, such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners reaching similar levels in 1960 and refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching 100% by 2000. However, some descriptions are unclear or inaccurate. The overview says the two appliances “shown same” and that the “highest amount of work was needed” in 2019, confusing ownership with work. The final paragraph also says housework fell to 20 hours in 2019, whereas the chart shows about 11; 20 hours is the 1960 figure. Develop the overview more precisely and report the key stages and endpoint values accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph about appliance ownership, and a separate paragraph about housework hours. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and “On the other hand” signals a shift to the second chart. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several comparisons are compressed into unclear sentences, particularly “the high amount of work in electrical appliances in this three households.” The contrast marker also suggests opposition, although the two charts show separate trends rather than directly opposing categories. Use clearer topic sentences and organise the appliance figures chronologically, then describe the housework trend with its main stages. More precise referencing would make the relationships between figures easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “gradually dropped,” “rapid growth,” “declining,” and “hours per week,” and you attempt to describe trends and comparisons. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate enough to make the data difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “amount of work in electrical appliances,” “needed more work,” and “average of household work in electrical appliances” confuse appliance ownership with housework. “This three households” also mislabels the three appliances. Choose precise terms such as “ownership,” “proportion of households,” and “housework hours,” and use verbs like “rose,” “fell,” or “levelled off” for trends. This would make your meaning clearer and give your vocabulary more control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the number of hours they spent in this housework per week” and a contrastive opening in the final paragraph. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction recur. For example, “The line graph illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “there is an rapid growth” has article and tense problems. The sentence beginning “The initially in 1920” is not grammatically complete, and “the number of hours … was gradually dropped” uses an incorrect passive form. These errors sometimes obscure the intended comparisons. Practise building accurate sentences around a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and tense before adding extra clauses.
