Student answer (Band 5.0)
The two line charts iluustrate changes in one country from 1920 to 2019. The first chart shoes the proportion of houses with washing machines, refrigrators and vacuum cleaner. The other graph shows the number of hours spent on per week.
Overall, more houses had electrical machines in 2019 than in 1920. At the same time, the time spent on housework went down alot.
In 1920, about 40% of houses had washing machines and 30% of houses had vacuum cleaner, but only 2% had a refigrator.By 1920 refrigrator increased sharply to 90% which was more than washing machines

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the two charts and give a relevant overall trend: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework hours fell. However, the report addresses the task only minimally. It gives just a few figures and does not describe the full period or the second chart with any specific data. There is also a major factual error: refrigerators rose from about 2% in 1920 to about 55% in 1940, not 90%; the 90% figure applies to 1960. The final comparison is incomplete, and the response stops before covering the later trends. The required minimum of 150 words is not met, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, report the main changes across the timeline and include accurate comparisons for both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning with a specific year. The overview also signals a comparison between appliance ownership and housework time. However, there is no clear progression through the data: the final paragraph jumps from 1920 to an incorrectly labelled “By 1920” and then ends abruptly. The link “At the same time” is understandable, but there are too few transitions to guide the reader through the different years and appliance trends. Develop separate, logically ordered comparisons—for example, early changes followed by later figures—and use clear time references such as “By 1940” and “By 2019” to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “sharply,” “electrical machines,” and “spent on housework,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors are noticeable: “iluustrate,” “shoes,” “refrigrators,” and “refigrator.” Some expressions are also imprecise or informal for an academic report, such as “alot” and “electrical machines”; “households” and “electrical appliances” would be more suitable. “The number of hours spent on per week” is awkwardly phrased. Aim to use accurate chart vocabulary consistently and check spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “increased,” “declined,” and “remained stable” would help describe the trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt a compound comparison with “but,” as in “40% of houses had washing machines … but only 2% had a refrigerator.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors recur. In “the number of hours spent on per week,” the grammatical pattern is incomplete; write “the number of hours spent on housework per week.” “By 1920 refrigerator increased” also uses an incorrect time reference and lacks an article before “refrigerator”; the intended comparison would need a later year and a form such as “the proportion of households with refrigerators increased.” There is also missing spacing after “refigrator.” Use varied but controlled sentence patterns, and proofread articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
