Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies several relevant trends, including the rise in refrigerator ownership, the later saturation of vacuum cleaners, and the dip in washing-machine ownership between 1960 and 1980. However, it does not report the second chart at all: the substantial fall in weekly housework, from 50 hours to 11, is a major feature of the task. There is also no clear overview bringing the main patterns together, and some figures are inaccurate: refrigerators were about 2%, not zero, in 1920, while washing-machine ownership was about 75%, not 65%, in 2019. The account therefore addresses the charts only minimally and leaves important information unreported. Include both charts and give an accurate overview before selecting key details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving from washing machines to refrigerators and then vacuum cleaners, and it uses time markers such as “in 1920” and “in 1960” to locate details. However, the organisation is limited to a series of separate statements rather than a clear overview followed by logically grouped comparisons. The second chart is omitted, so the account does not progress through all the task information. Some linking is also awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “continuous” and “the percentage of households.” Group the appliance trends together, then describe the housework trend, using clear transitions and references to connect related figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “noticeable drop,” “proportion,” “surpasses,” and “reaches its peak,” which helps describe changes and comparisons. The meaning is generally clear, but some choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive. For example, “usage” is not the best term for the percentage of households that own appliances; “ownership” is more accurate. “Continuous growth” and “continuous till 2019” are repeated and sound unnatural in this context. There are also inconsistent capitalisations, such as “Washing machines” and “Reaches,” which affect presentation. Aim for precise trend language and vary expressions, for example “rose steadily,” “levelled off,” and “remained at 100%.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses both simple statements and some longer structures, including a relative clause in “which increased around 65%” and comparisons between appliance ownership. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. Examples include “in country,” “households … own,” “increases to 55%,” and “the proportion of houses which has vacuum cleaners.” The fragment beginning “A continuous growth from 1940 to 2019” also lacks a main verb, while the sentence about refrigerators reaching their peak is awkwardly joined. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Practise consistent past-tense reporting and complete sentence structures, such as “ownership rose to about 55% in 1940 and continued to increase.”
