Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while time spent on housework fell. It selects relevant comparisons and supports them with figures, including refrigerators rising from about 2% to 100% and housework dropping from 50 to around 11 hours. Most reported trends are accurate, but there are a few notable data errors: washing-machine ownership was about 65%, not 54%, in 1980, and the vacuum-cleaner figure reached 100% in both 2000 and 2019, rather than merely its “highest data point” without stating the value. The overview also says refrigerator ownership increased steadily, although it levelled off after 1980. More precise reporting of these details would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the appliance trends and housework hours. The information generally progresses in chronological order, and linking expressions such as “By contrast,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. This gives the report a coherent arrangement. However, some connections are mechanical or awkward, particularly where several events are joined in long sentences with commas, as in the final paragraph. Punctuation spacing also interrupts the flow. To make cohesion more flexible and polished, use clearer sentence boundaries and vary how comparisons are linked, while keeping each paragraph focused on a distinct set of trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic vocabulary to describe the charts, including “ownership,” “proportion,” “fluctuated,” “increased sharply,” and “decreased considerably.” However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “increased,” “figure,” and “amount,” and several word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision. For example, “households electrical devices” is not a natural phrase, and “the highest data point” is vague when describing vacuum-cleaner ownership. Spelling errors such as “vaccum,” “approxiamtely,” and “ulitimately” are also noticeable. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise trend vocabulary would make the report clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses linked with “before” and “whereas,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in verb forms and sentence construction: “the percentage … begining” should use a past-tense verb, “before peaked” needs a participle or a full clause, and “before remained stable” is also incorrectly formed. The opening sentence lacks a clear grammatical structure, while comma splices appear in the final paragraph. There are also problems with articles and plural forms, such as “owning refrigerator” and “households electrical devices.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the main meaning is usually recoverable. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and divide long sentences into complete clauses.
