Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graphs illustrate proportions of households owning certain electrical gudgets and the total number of hours utilised doing house duties per week in a certain country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, by 2019 all the households were owning a Refrigerator and a Vacuum cleaner. Generally the proportion of people owning electrical appliances increased from 1920 to 2019. In contrast, the number of hours utilised doing housework followed a downwards trend from 1920 to 2019.

In 1920, only about 1% of households owned Refrigerators and percentage rose sharply to 90% in 1960. By 1980 all the homes were owning Refrigerators. The number of households owning a Washing machine was the highest at 40% in 1920. The percentage flactuated steadily, endind at slightly above 70% in 2019. Vacuum cleaner owners was second at 30% in 1920, but a sharp increase was observed, peaking to 100% in 2000.

In 1920, households spent 50 hours doing house duties per week. The number of hours declined to about 35 in 1940. A further decrease was observed to aroung 15 hours in 1980 and there after remaining almost constant up to 2000 before slightly dropping to just above 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both graphs and give a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. The main trends and several key figures are accurately selected, including refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980 and housework declining from 50 hours to just over 10. The response also compares the appliances at the start and describes the washing-machine pattern. However, a few details are imprecise: refrigerator ownership was about 2% in 1920, rather than 1%, and the washing-machine figure dipped around 1980 before rising again, so “fluctuated steadily” does not clearly describe that movement. The overview could also identify the vacuum cleaner’s later rise to full ownership. Overall, the task is addressed with relevant support, though some comparisons could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, with the appliance figures grouped separately from housework hours. The progression is easy to follow, and time markers such as “In 1920,” “By 1980,” and “before” help show chronological change. Contrast is also signalled clearly by “In contrast.” This is a logical structure with a clear overall progression. To make the links more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on repeated year-led sentences and connect related comparisons more directly—for example, contrast the refrigerator’s rapid rise with the washing machine’s slower, slightly uneven increase. Some phrasing, such as “The number of hours declined … A further decrease was observed,” is repetitive in structure, but it does not disrupt the organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “rose sharply,” “declined,” “downwards trend,” “peaking,” and “remaining almost constant.” These choices communicate the main movements clearly, and terms such as “proportions” and “percentage” fit the chart. However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “electrical gudgets,” “hours utilised doing house duties,” and “all the homes were owning” would be better expressed more directly. There are also spelling errors, including “flactuated,” “endind,” and “aroung.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and control. Aim for concise, conventional chart language and check spelling, while retaining the useful range of trend verbs already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “In contrast, the number of hours … followed a downwards trend” and the time clause “before slightly dropping … in 2019.” Most meanings remain clear. Some grammatical patterns are not well controlled, however. “All the households were owning” uses an unsuitable continuous form; write “all households owned” or “all households had a refrigerator.” In “The percentage flactuated steadily, endind at slightly above 70%,” the participle construction is attempted but the sentence also needs a clear subject for the percentage being described. “Vacuum cleaner owners was second” has an agreement problem, and “remaining almost constant” would be clearer as a complete clause. More accurate verb forms and agreement would strengthen the otherwise understandable range.
